Will one of you gurus that has the pricing spreadsheet look this one up for me? How much was full blown retail on this thing?

How much do you guys think this one could go for and still be a decent deal? I'm thinking that this wouldn't be a bad buy (if I can turn it again when I eventually get the ME12).

Isn't the ME 12 a 1598 with different inlay?

The 1598 is a solid adamas and sounds great, had one. Pick one up at about $1000 and resale.

Well...

The one on ebay has got epaulets on both sides... the ME only on the bass side. (does that make much of a sound difference?)

Otherwise, I don't know the differences... I'd be happy to be enlightened. :)

Sally, older MEs have epaulets on both sides (look at my 2001 model in my gallery).

This one is very similar to my ME 12-string...only meaningful difference is that the ME has a walnut neck, instead of the 5-piece.

I've played a newer ME with the epaulet on only one side....it doesn't make that much difference in sound.

I'd go $950 tops. You see used MEs go for $1000 or so. If you get this one, I wouldn't bother going for the ME unless you are a ME fan. I've played a couple of these and there is no significant difference in sound between it and the ME.

Well, Roger....

For starters, thanks for the input. I really do appreciate it.

For me, ***IF*** I get the ME12, I'm getting it with the pearl white top instead - it's a mentalsental (sentimental taken too far) thing. I loved an Ovation I had about 10 years ago - and the ME12 with pearl white top would be the closest thing to it, best I can tell.

I'm going to keep an eye on this one - so please know I appreciate info from those of you that know more about this stuff. :)

I remember Johnny's ME 12 from the tour last year...eppaulets on bass side only. That is one amazing sounding 12 string.

Sally-

I hope you are well.

I've played several of the original ME1598 12 string model, and it was a nice guitar, but not exactly my cup of tea. The 'standard' 1598 is very similar, but I actually liked it better (and owned one for a couple years).

The MEII1598 is, by far my favorite of all of them, and yes, the one eppaulette makes a big difference in sound. The sound is much fuller and it has better bass response. To me it has more character, and I feel it when I play. There are several other differences in the ME1598 and MEII1598 which contribute to the difference in sound.

There has been one on ebay for much less than I paid for mine...and when I last checked, it wasn't selling. Each time it's been relisted it's been cheaper. I think it's around $1600 now, but I don't recall for sure.

I have not seen the pearl white top ME as a 12 string. Last I knew, the pearl white one was a six string only. If I'm wrong, I'd love to know differently.

Bauerhillboy...thanks for the kudos on the guitar. She serves me very well.

Hope to see you all at the tour!
Be well!

Hiya Johnny...

Yeppers... I've been watching that black one on eBay.. but I'm not quite sure I want it in black.

I was told that I could special order the pearl white top and (it's just a guess) it might cost about $250 for the custom order.

Sally,

My two cents: go for what you really want. If you want to pick up something for now and trade up later, that's fine, but don't settle for less in the long run, even if that means waiting and special ordering the specifics you want. I understand losing a great guitar - I lost my 1869-CCB last December, and would give anything (almost) to get it back. I'm looking to order a custom 12-string to replace it, but still hope to find it, as nothing can truly replace the sentimental value.

Most of my family think I'm nuts to be that attached to a guitar, but they're obviously not the type we are here on this forum...

Oh, one other thought. I think that as a general rule the guitars with just the bass-side holes are much more prounouncedly deep and rich than those with both. I haven't tried a bass-only Adamas, but my EliteT only has the bass holes, and it has just an incredibly powerful, deep tone to it that projects way better than anything else I've played. I think that it must be the bass-side holes, but I have no real idea why it works that way.

Maybe someone smarter could answer...(jump in here guys!)

I've just ordered an orange flame 1778T that only has the base side holes, with no epaulets; it was the bass and overall sound that hooked me. It just sounded so much better than any other Ovation in the shop. Not that the range was large.

I don't know much about ovations but this was something special

FWIW that 1598 isn't black, it's ruby graphite.

Sally, I forgot you wanted the pearl top.....yes, I'd hold out for that.

I don't recall the single epaulet ME I played having that much better bass response(this was in a small room at Elderly)....and "bass" and "12-string" are almost mutually exclusive terms anyway, IMHO. At least in standard tuning.

TWA- We are talking about 2 different auctions. The one I referred to was:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Adamas-Ovation-1598-MEII-Melissa-Etheridge-12-s...

The guitar is actually the natural (gray) w/black burst. Great price for that guitar...wish I could get it myself.

Sally- Good luck with the guitar...I hope you get what you want. It's always cool to have a customized instrument. Keep in mind that it may be a long time to receive. I waited a long time for my guitar (MEII1598) to be built and it wasn't even a custom job. Good things come to those who wait!

Roger-I always intentionally play with a 'thumpy' bass end on my 12 string when I play solo (simulates a bass drum). I even played a recent gig with no added pedals because I had more than enough bass coming from the guitar direct into the p.a.

Be well!

Sorry to butt in. I thought she was referring to the auction at the top of this thread.

WOW....using a 12-string for bass....that's impressive. Who woulda thunk it?????

I would admit, the ME 12-string has the best bass in standard tuning of any 12-string I've ever played.
