Watch out, guys... I know FOUR chords now.

((((((((just kidding)))))))))

Seriously, I'm trying to learn better habits this time around - so I'm taking lessons. (great therapy!)

Anyway, second lesson was today - and my teacher dude (Bill) fell in love with the 2005 collectors - it's all about that contour bowl!

The more I've had a chance to get comfy with this guitar, the more I love it. I'm sooooooooooo glad I was able to get this guitar instead of the 1778LX right off the bat. (I still like that one - but I wouldn't get it now without having the contour bowl!)

The little store that is just starting to bring in the O's hasn't gotten anything in yet in the LX or Contour bowl department.

Anyway, Bill said the same thing I did... that he wasn't aware of the back of the bowl being contoured "in". We both had erroneously thought (based on pictures we had seen) that the only "contour" was at the bottom waist to help it rest nicely on your leg.

If any of you haven't had a chance to cuddle up to one of these, you should try one! Very comfy - and this one sounds fabulous.

Thanks again, Stephen... this guitar is truly a joy to play.

Now... to schmooooooze you outta that '97... :)

Toodles,

It's the new bowl shape introduced by Ovation in 2005. Photos of it are on their website. Its shape allows the guitar to sit more properly on your knee (sitting) or against your body (standing), much like a wooden box guitar does. It's extremely comfortable and sounds great. Dave

Grey8,

The Contour Bowl is Ovation's latest innovative design for the back of the guitar. All the benefits of the deep bowl with contours to make it more comfortable when sitting or standing.

Check out pics of the '05 collectors or the new '06 collectors for pics.

A bunch of the upper-end Ovations are now offered with a "contour" bowl that is shaped across the back to be a bit easier on your gut while playing, without sacrificing the tone of the deep body setup.

Check out this page on Ovation\'s site for some pics and info.

Contour bowl has already worked its way down to Legend(model 2077, Elderly has one)....probably will be available in Balladeer within a year, IMHO.

There are some things that mid-bowl does better than contour....don't write it off yet.

While Eden posted that link for a picture of the back side of the contour bowl - I still don't think that picture does it justice.

When I look at that, even now after I've got the real thing in my hot little hands, that picture still seems to show that the bowl still bows out to the backside like all the other ones - when it doesn't.

Here's a another one - but it still doesn't show how much flatter* the back of the bowl really is.

http://www.ovationguitars.com/index.cfm?fa=choosing

I think it's an optical illusion for all of us who's brains can't wrap around the idea of a non-round bowl on the O's. :)

It's an old dogs/new tricks thing - we all know the bowls to be round for all of these years, so that's the only way we can perceive these things to be!

To me, it seems the back of this thing doesn't photograph well - none of the pictures that I could find on the web show it from a 90 degree "horizon" view of the back of the bowl.

Meaning that I think a helpful representation of this bowl would be if someone would take a picture of it from looking down the neck of the guitar to the back (face down) with a white background. Then, you'd be able to see that the bowl has an asymetrical convex trench (very mild, but definitely there is a dip there) back.

I loaned my digital camera out to a friend last week - so if anyone else wants to take a shot at photographing this, go to it. Otherwise, I'll try do it next week.

*The term "flat" is applied loosely - in true O fashion, it's the curviest flat you'll ever see. :)

The contour bowl is best described as Ovation's attempt at a "box guitar" profile with improvements, IMHO.
