Location: Chicago | My main guitar for over 30 years has been my 1974 Ovation Legend 1117. It has never had the “electronics”: no pickup, no preamp. Back in high school I did not like the “oinky” sound of the piezo, although I had to admit that Ovation did it far better than anyone else (and few companies did anything at all on the acoustic-electric front). Last summer I sprang for a brand new 1769 ADII, Al Di Meola signature. As a guitar it’s absolutely first-rate: gorgeous workmanship (how about that abalone?), rich sound, superior playability. The only problem is that the pickup continues to give that sqwaky, oinky sound. I have a Crate Acoustic amp and a Fishman Loudbox. I have processed through all sorts of pedals that I own: Fishman Arua, Zoom A2.1U, and the best: Yamaha Acoustic Magistomp. I suspect that there may be something wrong with the electronics on my new guitar: The booster button doesn’t work and the general output level is too low. I’m thinking of sending it to the factory for a check-up
Solution: I sent back my first guitar, the 1974 Legend, for refurbishment to the Mothership. They replaced the worn out bridge and shredded neck. As a perk, they even textured the bowl at the point where it rests on your leg. It’s now a glory to behold. Last week I had local luthiers at Third Coast install a Fishman Acoustic Matrix undersaddle pickup with a Prefix preamp. The combination is HUGE: a warm, powerful sound that amplifies to a quality very close to the mic’d sound. I took it out for a test drive at a gig last night and was NOT disappointed: three hours of bliss! I guess the punchline is this: sometimes the best new thing is what you’ve had all along.

Ain't it great? I did the same thing a few years back with my humble little '71 Balladeer 1111. Now it's a force of nature. The SOUND is unbelievable. Clean and natural, really ACOUSTIC! And the only alteration to the guitar is a 1/4" jack on the bowl; no knobs or sliders-- don't need 'em. I run it through a Roland AC60 acoustic chorus amp. The EQ is usually flat because the pickup is so well-balanced. I run it with just a touch of chorus and reverb or delay, and it sounds great. Every once in a while I'll put a Zoom 504 II acoustic processor inline if I want different effects--especially 12-string-- but that's about it. I wonder what it would be like if Ovation put Fishmans in as original equipment? They'd be even more awesome! |

(sorry GC) :D
I really like the plugged sound of the OP24 and Optima - they have the fullest amped sound I've played. |

I thought this thread was going to be about the VIP preamp. I opened up the preamp. It has "Fishman control pcb" on the circuit board. |
