Joined: May 2005 Posts: 486 Location: North Carolina | I've used a GR-33 and a Strat in the past, so I'm familiar with synth use. I am, however, toying with the idea of mounting a GK-2 on my 1869 for gig use, similar to what DiMeola does. For those who have done this, my questions: How do you mount the pickup under the strings to get it close to the strings and the saddle, and; What do you do about a case, given that you can't close the case lid over the top mounted portion of the pickup? Thanks.

Mount the GK-2 as close to the saddle as possible without touching it, using the 2 sided mounting tape to avoid making holes in the top. Follow the Roland instructions for aligning and adjusting the pickup so you get even levels across all strings.

Joined: February 2005 Posts: 253 Location: New Orleans | I pasted this from my past post. I retro-fit my Ovation Elite 1778T with the Roland GK-2A Divided Pickup and it is plugged into my Roland VGA-7 Amplifier. The bracket does not fit the Ovation but you can do away with it and just use the velcro to adhere the control of the pickup to the top of the guitar. I used the double stick tape to install the pickup near the bridge. (measure carefully for perfect intonation) I haven't had a problem with the control of the pickup moving but I have posted the question as to whether or not ot would damage the top to install the pickup permanently by using the two screws. I haven't really found an answer to that yet so I continue to keep the tape. Its very sturdy and hasn't come off yet. One problem I ran into was closing the case. I took a light hammer and tapped the area of the lid where the pickup control is when you shut the case and made a perfect sized indentation so I could close it. It looks great, you can NOT tell! It CAN be done and the finished product will rock your socks OFF! I'd have it NO other way. Good luck!!!

Using the double sided tape is much more painstaking than the screws and springs I used on the strat, and although I couldn't get the pickup as close to the strings as it was on the strat, I compensated by adjusting the string sensitivity on the bass side. I like the idea of hammering the inside of the case to make room for the control box. Clever. Thanks to all.
