Joined: May 2002 Posts: 3005 Location: Las Cruces, NM | Hi Mike Nice letter, very nice thoughts. I'll try to respond and give some answers. Almost exactly a year ago, my wife Shirley had an operation on her right eye for a cataract that had rendered that eye blind, her left eye also has a cataract but still has some limited sight. about two weeks after the operation her eyesight returned for about a week, then her eye deterioated and she has been almost totally blind since. Her Brother and my son's mother in law had the same experience and their eyes recovered after treatment, so there is hope. If you wish to pray, please pray for her recovery of her sight. As for me, yes I play for my own enjoyment, I have become an electrical freak, trying various amp and guitar combinations, looking for that great sound. I patched up my pickgaurd with some clear shipping tape to stop the cracks around the amp plug and that seems to be working. My son's bluegrass bands album was number 1, 2 and 3 on the bandspace.com web site for quite a while. Unfortunately for me, I didn't play on it. But, I don't care, I have played on every live thing they have done, and I'm going back to country, leaving bluegrass behind since my fiddle playing brother died. MWoody, you are the salt of the earth, the people who have made our world survive, and I love your concern for people like us, who are considered too old to matter. Thank you!! I am going to post this to get a response from our other friends or enemies. Woody, along with a bunch of other members, is a great person. We'll be praying for your wife's eyesight. I'm also reminded of something Fanny Crosby who wrote a lot of great hymns once said. Since she was blinded at an early age by a medical mistake she knew there are more important things in life. When asked what could be worse than being blind,She replied; "To have sight without vision". I think your wife has pretty good vision to have married a guy like you. :)

I wish you were just down the street and I could drop in when I should be mowing the lawn. I value your friendship and I relish your stories of wisdom and folly (they go hand in hand don't they). DON"T BE A STRANGER TO THE BOARD! :D

You honor the rest of us by sharing this. An older preacher friend of mine has a saying, "It is a sacred trust when others allow you to be a part of some of the most intimate times of their life." God bless you both. Woody, well done, noel

The same thing happened to my dad when he had cataract surgery over 20 years ago. He eventually regained his sight even to the point where he could drive again. So keep the faith! Woody, you're an absolute blessing to this forum. There are so many of you that I would count it a privilege to meet and to know personally. It pains me that I haven't been able to make it to any of the OFC tours yet to help make this a reality... One of these years. In the final analysis what goes on here really does transcend guitars doesn't it? God bless you all.

One thing that helps for someone like my wife, who is facing blindness, is her love for music and information that can be received aurally. She now tends to WATCH TV with her ears so she can be involved with life without having to see everything. Today we jointly made up a batch of tuna fish salad for sandwiches where I provide the eyes and she provides the recipe and preparation methods, and it turned out great. What was funny is we boiled the eggs, chopped the green onions, and found out that we didn't have any tunafish, so I had to head for the store in 100 degree weather and get the goods. I also got some potato chips, on sale of course. Just an example of how us old people enjoy life by doing what we have always done, but not as easily. I also have a new Shar-Pei puppie that takes up a lot of my time. She is a great handful but I love her, as my son says, she is so ugly, you love her, but she is also very good. Bailey

Heck, I was almost always on when you posted. Course, tired in the morning. I concur with what was said...you are a real asset to the OFC. Was talking about you over at Moze Guitars...about the bluegrass in Poway, etc. They remember and wanted me to wish you well.

But I suspect that at heart, your're about 16. Jeff, if you sold one of those cheesy-ass Martins, you could come to the OFC gathering next year......

Class of 1953, you still are in my dreams, Korea, choppers, and electric guitars came later. Not 16, 17!!
