Hello all,

Sometimes I think pawn shops know what they've got, but today I ran across a deal. I stopped by Charlie's Pawn here in Knoxville, TN and hanging behind the counter was a nice looking Ovation that said $269.00!! I figured it was a Celebrity. On closer inspection, it had the old embossed metal tag inside and said "1117-4" and I thought WOW!. Then I thought, at that price it probably comes with a gig-bag. When the girl came from the back with the original brown hardshell Ovation case, I flipped. $280.00 out the door, no tax. After running the numbers when I got home, turns out to be four years older than me!!; a 1973 Legend! The best part is no cracks in the finish and only one small ding on the top. I'd give it a strong 9 out of 10 on the meter. Just thought I'd share with you guys the fact that you should definitely check out your local pawn shops because you never know what you'll find.

Gotta love a good find!! They just don't happen to often anymore. Congratulations! They didn't have any Nationals, did they?

Didn't see any Nationals; they had an older Martin; I think from the 1980's but it was beat up pretty bad. I can't believe the shape of this Legend. Has a sweet sound, too. It's neat to play an instrument that is older than you. I'll definitely have to use this one on some recording sessions.

Jeff, I don't think they made too many instruments older than us.

Thanks Jeff W.

On closer inspection I also noticed that the bowl is the old style hand laid cloth; when did they phase this out? I know the new Glen Campbell reissues have the cloth bowl again.

Not all hand-laid fibreglass bowls are "shiney". Just the very early ones . . .

They did get bowl-paint after a while . ..

Shiny bowls left the scene in early 1969. The hand laid bowls were around until about 1983.

I thought the hand-laid bowls on all models stopped with the shiney bowls (which is why I thought the shiney bowls went into the Mid/latte 70's) on all models except the Adamas.
My bad.

Shandy,

You got a real good deal. :)

Anytime I go to some of the Pawn shops in Knoxville all they have is crap or they want an arm and a leg for anything decent. :(

BTW; Where is Charlies Pawn?

Yeah, this one is not a shiny bowl; it has a light texture but nothing like the newer models; it's a very thin texture. You can see the cloth in the bowl if you really look close; more noticeable looking at the inside.

Charlie's Pawn is on Kingston Pike just east of the Pick 'N' Grin music store; before you get to the intersection of Kingston Pike & Northshore Drive.

Thanks I know where "Pick & Grin" is. Shouldn't have to much of a problem finding it.

Do they have many guitars? The pawn shop in Sevierville does but they are way over priced.
