Hey guys,

I know it'll be awhile till any of my guitars needs refretting, but when that DOES occur, how much $$$ will I have to spend?

Should I might as well try to find another guitar?

I just figured I'd like to know ahead of time, because I've heard they're pricy, but I've never heard a real estimate of what it may cost.

Thanks,
Steve

I think you can get it done for $250 or so

If there is still meat left you should be able to have them dressed before a complete refret and thats considerably less. ;)

When do you typically refret?

I guess when the grooves are so deep they almost go straight down to the fretboard?

I'm not sure, I'm glad I finally decided to talk about this as I was always baffled by the subject.

Now that we're on the subject though, is it possible to replace entire fretboards on your own and get a professional to do the fretting? Or would that be extremely difficult?

After taking it to a good tech in your local area...on my project guitar, deep cuts into the frets. They looked at it, did a fret dress for about $60 and they are great.

A complete refret (replacing all the frets with new wire) is about $250 like Al said.

If you just have a few bad frets (lower 3-4) and some dents in the others, then a redress and polish like Tony mentioned for $60 - 100.

I'm having a neck & fretboard dressed, reset, cracks filled, and some scratches buffed out at the factory on an 1869, all for about $200. Unless something big comes up last minute, it sounds like a good price to me.

Edensharvest,
That is an outstanding price. Just the price for a neck reset alone was $150 for my O. All that for $200 plus you have the piece of mind knowing its going to be done right. Best money ever spent! :D

If it's an electric you can just buy a new neck from warmoth, if you can. If it's an ovation go to the factory and use whatever the factory recommends. On an electric if you have any choice about fret wire, get steel, it works great and last a long time.

Warmoth's necks are just so pricy, I don't wanna spend the money buying there. If I want anything other than dot inlays the necks are easily over $350.

When the time comes I'd rather save that money and get it re-fretted.

Just did a fret leveling & recrowning on an old CC67. Wasn't too difficult. An indication of need for redressing/refretting is usually when the first position fretwires are grooved enough the treble strings bottom out on the higher frets, and start to buzz. Loosening the trussrod is NOT the remedy here. I would say the cost estimates given here are quite appropriate to the amount of work, and skills, required.
