I recently purchased an electric Ovation bass guitar from a private seller. I need your help to identify which model it actually is. It struck my interest by being an electric in the first place. As far as I know Ovation only produces acoustic guitars. The guitar say "Celebrity by Ovation" on it, it is a four string electric (non-acoustic) bass with a black body and a single KMD 260 pickup on the bottom with two offset KMD 240 pickups above it. It does have a plate on the bottom of the neck on the backside that says "Celebrity by Ovation 541615 A KAMAN MUSIC PRODUCT". And towards the top of the neck on the backside it says "Made in Korea". The neck itself has triangular shaped pearl or ivory inlays in the frets. I would like to post pictures but unfortunately i cant get them to work on this forum. I used Ovation's website to see if the serial number would give up any information, but as I understand it, it only tells me this guitar was made in 1999. I would like to know what model bass this is and if its fake or not. Please help me out.

Wow man! What a coincidence! I just purchased a guitar of that same series! Yeah! And i spent the last few of days researching it.

This is the Celebrity BC2 bass. It is probably from 89, however the original Celebrity solidbody bass had a different body, which you can see in this advertisement from 1988 . Then, they seemed to take the bodies from the Applause GTX line.

Here is the link to the Applause GTX Catalogue where you will see the AR53 basses, which are basically identical to yours (except the reversed headstock) and here you will have the original Ovation 1988 Pricelist , which includes your BC2 and my GC3.

The story behind the Celebrity line is at VintageGuitar.com in this article . I guess the last paragraph tells the story.

Oh, one more thing - thanks to StoneBobbo i know that the serial number on imports do not conform to the serial number rules that are given at this website that you checked (this bass is made in Korea - either just parts were made there or it was built there too).

Congratulations!
Greetings from Poland

Oh, well, one more gallery here - check THIS link at OvationTribute.com - the electrics gallery has one GC3 that looks like mine but is white. It is wrongly named Ultra GS, whereas the Ultra GS look totally different (check the inventory at BaronAudio) or the Ultra Hardbodies ad at OvationTribute.com.

WOW, thanks for the info. seriously this thing sounds like its older than i thought. as you can see the hardware has a little rust on it that needs to be cleaned due to the fact it was in storage in huntington beach california. but it plays very well already. maybe i should find the guitar version like yours. it would be nice to have a matching set. and yes your looks very nice make me want to have mine painted red.

Miles of BaronAudio.com, one of the two guys who started this very website, who considers selling some of his collection, has a GTX 23 and 33 guitars there. The GTX 23 is black. Check this link out. Also, try searching for auctions and reviews for the Celebrity BC2, the GTX 53 (or Applause GTX or Kaman GTX) or the Applause AR52 or maybe AR53. I only found this auction in eBay history, but the paintjob on this one is spectacular, however so very 80s ;)

And if you find a red Celebrity Bass like yours, do let me know :) Me and my wife playing similar instruments, that would be nice. Maybe even too nice ;)
