Joined: November 2005 Posts: 1126 Location: Omaha, NE | I am a little surprised and disappointed that my Adamas didn\'t sell on eBay. My best bid was $610. My reserve was $800 and I really don't feel good about selling this for less than $900. I am selling this to raise funds to buy one of Al's new Koa specials. Its not so much about raising money as it is about not wanting to let too many guitars build up. I've got three now, and that's enough for me. So, whatcha think? Should I try again on eBay? Should I just keep it? Should I try to sell it elsewhere? Any thoughts?

Just list the specs, features and condition. Maybe a short statement about how you used it and why you are selling it. Nobody cares how much you loved the guitar and how great sounds. When I see a seller going way overboard about how great an item is, BUT he still wants to sell it, that's a red flag. It's like explaining to your wife why you are late getting home from work - the fewer words the better. Dave

As already mentioned, the great praise comes across as a hard sell. In addition, you mentioned some fret wear and that you play the guitar a lot, yet there is no closeup picture of the frets. You mentioned that there is normal wear, but don't describe any of it. I would presume some pick scratches and maybe a small ding or two on the front. I would like to see overly full disclosure. Other auctions have had pictures of small scratches, showing just how minor they are. I purchased an electric guitar that has two small dings, and would not have done so if there had not been pictures in the auction. The Optima preamp is not the current factory preamp, which you mention. To someone who doesn't know anything about the Optima there is the presumption that it is somehow lesser than the OP50. Perhaps you could very briefly explain the important differences. Your 3 day acceptance period is great, and would be attractive for sure. My only comment is that you have to be sure to protect yourself with pictures or video detailing the condition of the guitar before shipping. There are too many scammers out there these days who might accidentally damage the guitar and then try to return it to you.

Show a closeup of the first three or four frets if you say there is "some" wear. If there is pick flutter on the top, show a closeup of that area at an angle that the actual flutter shows. Closeups of ANY dents and dings are a requisite as well. You mention the ruby graphite top changing colors. Show that by shooting the pics outdoors and pick a great angle of the top that shows the color glow. Full disclosure is the motto. I don't think your text is over the top. My preference is to see an ad that someone has taken time to write. It usually shows me that they in fact have owned and lived with the guitar and that they appreciate its value. I think it is OK to say that you love the axe, but you are itching for some new flavor and need to sell it. Almost all guitar players (especially those who would be in the market for a premium guitar like yours) understand GAS and limited funds or space. I see too many ads on ebay for stuff that just lists the specs (usually lifted from a company web site) and some comment like "excellent condition". That does not tell me nearly enough, and then forces me into an unnecessary exchange of questions and answers that usually require more and more clarification. This is especially true if we are talking relatively seriously money and it usually means that the seller is a pass through seller that knows nothing really about the item. Lots of great pictures and details eliminate most of that. Tom (ttenn) is sadly also correct. It really is a buyers market which is good for those of us wanting to relieve GAS and bad for those of us selling our treasures. I agree that you should wait another month or so and try again nearer to Christmas and run your 7 day auction to end on Sunday. I don't know why, but Sunday bidders seem to end up paying more ... Anyway, that's just my 2 cents ... good luck Amigo!

But your model getting the price you think it should is an exception, not the rule. They used to routinely go for $900, but rarely in the last couple of years I believe.

You just never know. I'd wait a bit, give it until maybe mid-November when people start really hitting the Christmas shopping. People go crazy and spend WAY too much for stuff during the holidays.

There's a current auction for an Adamas that has 3 bids, with the last bid over $1100 more than the previous bid! This is a relisting after it did not make reserve last time. Looks like the seller is trying to pump up the price more than a little bit!
