Back in the 70's when I bought my first Ovation, I recall trying out an electric Ovation that liked a Gibson 335.
The entire guitar was black, and I think was made of lyrachord (SP), the same material that has formed the back of traditional Ovations.

I should have purchased it at the time.

Has anyone ever seen this model?

Eclipse.

It was made of wood . . . just painted with bowl paint.

Thanks for getting back to me,
I am curious as to how the guitar sounds. I owned a 335 a number of years ago and am looking for somthing similar now.

It looks functionally identical to the Thunderhead, just not as pretty. Though I've never played the eclipse, if it's anything like the T-head...well, it's my 'go to' guitar for any rockabilly or jazzy sound I want and just loves to sit in my hands purring away for hours...

I have had all of the storms, and this one was the best. I think the pickups have better tone than what was used on either the Tornado or Hurricane and I like the finish. It's pretty hard to mark it up, and doesn't show fingerprints etc... As I understand it, the bodies were just Tornado or Thunderhead bodies that for whatever reason wouldn't look nice stained.... so they painted them with bowl paint instead. Oh, yeah.. the Eclipse also had normal wiring, or at least mine did. Two vol, two tone, and a pickup selector.... not sure who dreamed up the blend control thing with the pickup mute/phase thing, but I found that annoying.

Miles, I'm pretty sure all Eclipse's were 18 fret (vs. the more conventional 16 fret clear). This places the pus closer together. Could this be why you think it sounded better? I compared a 16 fret Thead to an 18 fret Thead and same thing - the 18 fretter seemed to have something different (better) to it. Dave
