Hey Bill,

Is there any truth to this info? Please excuse the fact that it's on a (gulp) Martin site...

Interesting story about the GP
I like how the GP and the PF (particularly got named). Any why can't ovation have some good looking women in their ads? They used to.

There was a an archtop F-hole Adamas prototype at the factory. Had a UK11 pickup as well as the piezo.

I saw that, as well as a SSB Adamas with a Breadwinner/deacon HB near the neck. Either could be a KILLER jazz guitar.

Sorry Tim, the resonator proto's are as close (red-necked/inbred cousins) as you're going to get to an O' banjo :p :D :p :D

...oh, be still, my racing heart!

Was it a "tried it and didn't like it" or "tried it and will produce them" prototype?

Excellent question!

The Hamer Improv is as close as it gets and that guitar is outrageously elusive, not to mention a bit pricey. The Monaco Std w/o the Bigsby is pretty close too.

For the record, I don't know anything.

I wonder if a wide necked Viper with a coil-tapped humbucker/piezo blender blender pre-amp of some sort would work....Nah!! that'd never sell. TAkeYourmoneyLOR is doing horrible with that T-5 thing my buddy Marc Seal is playing.

The resonator at the OFC gathering was fantastic, I don't know if there'd be a market for it outside of ovationistas, but it's great.

That Reso is a killer guitar, I played that more than anything else there. The resonator market for biscuit cone models is mostly blues players, and they are so into the vintage thing it would be a waste of time as a production model. Now if Robert Johnson was still around and decided to play an Ovation resonator the factory wouldn't be able to cope with the demand.

Quite a write up in the electrics. I think much of his info came from this board and not the book though.

The Charlie Byrd story is correect but I don't know if he actually said "it deserves an Ovation". He could have. Other than that I don't know where the name came from other than there were several being tossed about. One of the leaders was Newport but that got shot down because of Newport cigarettes, Charlie didn't want to have anything to do with tobacco.

Well, at least the name ended up in the Hamer line ... and it's a damn fine machine. Vintage orange wouldn't look so good on a Chrysler tho' ... unless it's dropped and chopped.
