Hello. I came home to discover a large box in the kitchen of my studio-teeny-apartment. My Ovation has arrived. I'm tuning it up now. But this one WAS made in Korea. I kinda expected that from the blurry photo. Anyway, the serial number is 1001926. I have been to the Ovation Home and the Reference here. And I cannot figure it out. So, any assistance will be greatly appreciated. It is over four years old, cuz that is when the previous owner bought it used. Except for a damaged decal, and dust bunnies in the sound box it seems in good shape. Well, I'm gonna tune this up, and annoy my neighbors.

Do a search for 4861. I think they were made for a couple years in Korea. Maybe just assembled there.

Here\'s some info on it.

What leads you to believe it was made in Korea? Does it say it on the label? (and does it say 4861 on the label as well?)

There was a thread on this in December of 2005. Made in Korea for about 6 months, according to al and Tony. The 4 is the key, according to Bill.

Wabbit (formerly Waskel)
It sez: Model No. 4861, Made in Korea, A Kaman Music Product. On a Blue Oval (dusty) Label.
Go figure... I'm lost.

Click on Search up at the top of this page and type in 4861 in the space for the search terms. It will bring up the December 05 thread. Apparently Ovation had some Balladeers made in Korea for a few months around 1989. Should be of comparable quality, but may have started out a little cheaper because of the cheaper Korean labor.

Wabbit (again)
Just looked a that Ovation Archive/Discontinued item. It sez "Bracing:_____". It lists no bracing. But this has a bunch of bracing. I can see it through the sound hole. Kind of a V going toward the big end, and another strut going from the neck-brace/adjustment hex-nut thingie, and the battery-box/pre-amp.
Still Lost...

OMA,

Don't put too much stock into the Ovation site's info. If it doesn't list the bracing, it's just incomplete info - doesn't mean there isn't any. Check on a few other guitars, and you'll find holes there too. Just not quite all there.

My brother has an early 90's Pinnacle that was made in Korea as well - very nice guitar for the price; flamed maple top, shallow bowl, & FET3 preamp.

I remember reading some info about the 4861 a while back. It was a standard balladeer that was made in Korea for a very brief period, then discontinued. It has been reported (don't quote me on this though) that people who own(ed) them really like these guitars and swear by them. The quality and playability are comparable with that of its U.S. made cousins at a more affordable price. They don't make them these days. In the here and now, the available ones are the U.S.-made 1861s (shallow bowl standard balladeer).

Congratulations on your new guitar, and play her to your hearts' content! :)

OMA,

Does your guitar have a laminated 5pc neck or a 1pc?

bauerhillboy;
Have no idea what a five-piece neck is...
Just looking at it, it looks to me that the neck and headpiece are all one piece. At the base, by the body, there is a little black piece laminated to it. Don't know if it is plastic or what.
Also, can a novice adjust the action at the bridge? See new post...
Oh yeah... (to show my ignorance) This thing is LOUD!
Suprised the hell outta me. I didn't expect this much volume out of a super-shallow shell. I have an electric, I turn it down to practice. This thing is loud without an amp. I guess my neighbors will have to live with it. I live with mega-bass rap music.
