I would sand them off then refinish the top.

I certainly would'nt try sanding them off. If you are hell-bent on removing them I would try a heat gun or a blow dryer and gradually warm them while trying to lift them with a plastic putty knife. Maybe even setting a clothes iron on them for a moment might soften the glue enough to lift them off.

I always thought that the epaulets were required on the wood topped Ovations to strengthen the narrow strips of spruce between all those bubble holes. I would worry that if you removed them you might end up with a crack near the holes. This obviously wouldnt be an issue on a graphite topped Adamas.

But now I wonder about the Elite T which has no epualets. I'll bet there is something on the inside of the top to stengthen the spruce around the holes.

OFC member xnoel (member #1745) has removed the epaulets from a viper using a regular household iron.

I emailed him and asked how he did it (I haven't got up the nerve to try it on mine yet!) and here is part of his email reply.....

..."Removal was not all that difficult.
Use a regular clothes pressing iron.
Place a towel over the epaulet, to protect the top finish.
Heat it for 30 seconds or so then carefully use something like a putty knife to start at an edge and try to work it loose. If it will not start, more heat is needed.
This process will need to be repeated many times."

"Once the epaulets are off, the real work begins, removing the left behind epoxy.
I believe the better job of heating and removing the epaulets, the less epoxy to remove.
I used acetone and cloth and Q tips. It take a lot of rubbing. Not really hard, but takes some patience and care"......

Good luck and post us some pics!

I took them off my CV68 because I just don't care for them. It was a black top and looked fine when it was done.
I have since taken the entire top off that guitar and have purchased two matched pieces of redwood for a new top. Hot weather caused me to put that project on hold until cooler weather, which has arrived.

I do have some pics of the guitar after the removal, since I have never posted a picture here, all I can do is email pics.

...It must be pretty tough  'cause I've been trying for about 10 mins to upload a picture that Noel sent me of his viper. I've uploaded the image (4 times) and each time it gives me a url but when I go to my gallery the picture is not there and when I try to post it to this thread, nothing happens....

Everybody check their galleries and see if you can find my four missing pics and I'll try again! (They gotta be SOMEWHERE!! )

It's either the apostrophe or the space in the filename. rename the file to something simple and try again.
