Location: PDX | Jeff W's thread has got me thinking lately about the perfect stable of guitars. I have about a dozen or so guitars, picking them up here ad there looking for "the one". There are a number of niches to fill, so just one guitar really wont cut it for me. I'm not really a collector for the sake of collecting, nothing wrong with that mind you. But for me if they don't get played i just as soon get rid of them and keep looking.
So i was thinking just exactly am i looking for. Here is what i came up with;
1) A/E with great acoustic sound that also has great balance when plugged in.
2) A fat, woody sounding jazz guitar.
3) A sweet wood box with clear articulation.
and really, that's it for me.
My 1457 fills spot #1.
I'm still looking for #2 and Ovation doesn't have it in their line up. The Hamer Improv could fill it. But it is very expensive and on a two year waiting list.
For #3, so far the Santa Cruz H-13 is on the short list.
So what's your "perfect stable"?

But, to each his own of course... Yeah Phill, i played your THead at the gathering. It's got that 335 thing going on. A nice bluesy hollow body sound. And when you try and coax a jazz sound out of it, it goes all thin. At least to my ear. There is a real difference in tone from the L4 to the 335 i describe as woody -- one of those subjective kind of things i guess.

Location: Boise, Idaho | I would add a 12 fretter with a wider neck for fingerstyle. I like the variety I have, although the uninformed think I only have one kind of guitar. |

But Mom, I LIKE Ovations. And they're all different. One's Korean, one's Chinese, and (at last) one is American.
Oh yeah, I hardly play the Psuedo-Strat anymore, and it was my first. I still play it but... |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Variety is the spice of life, supershallow, artist, mid, deep and contour. Spruce, cedar, spanish pine, all the exotics like Waterfall Bubinga, and carbon graphite. 12, 14 and 16 fret necks in different widths. That's just the acoustic Ovations. My wife finally asked how many varieties of Ovations there were and I told her there must be a hundred just of the discontinued models. Then we can go to Adamas. |
