It seems that the band Little Big Town has stirred up a resurgence of fat harmonies. I love them, and their harmonies are amazing, and now more and more current bands are getting into it. Another new band that I stumbled on has awesome harmonies is One Flew South. Very CSN/Eagles influenced. Here's a link to them singing live, with no p.a....just totally raw and live. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tilzNDx3tDM One of the most beautiful, tight harmony performances I've heard recently was the first cut on the Eagles latest release, No More Walks In the Wood: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydkFFHfHAm8

The rap trend started it by taking musical talent completely out of the picture. Somebody probably discovered an old album and found out there was something else going on other than the melody.

I just figured it would be a night out. It turned out to be be a great show. One of the things that I noticed right away is that they have 3 guys in the band who can sing and create great harmonies. I was really impressed with them.

Here is Austin it's "cool" to suck and those with real talent often are shunned by younger bands. On the other end of the spectrum we have the over educated sidemen who come out of what once were great schools but are now just paper mills for the paying parents. They can play anything in a stiff way with very little soul, if any, but it works for a lot of the singer songwriters and swing jazz people in town. Rap on the other hand and Hip Hop often can be very cool here in Austin with some of the better musicians backing up artists. I think a lot of kids got into Hip Hop and Rap from economics. If a good sax is a grand and a good guitar almost as much then Rap looks like a cheap way in. Just my two cents. I was just making an observation of many of the younger, as in under 30, musicians in town and I see it in many other cities as well. For every great artist in Austin there is 100 wannabes, many of whom will become great themselves but many are just asses with attitudes. I found in Europe that the musicians there tend to be much more serious and open minded and I hope for that everywhere. But, to get back to your point, yes, Austin is great. Take care.
