Location: NJ | Does anyone know of a good source for buying D'Addario strings individually??
I play with D'Addario Phoshor Bronze (light gauge) strings. When I play out, I keep breaking D's and G's (and the occasional A, but not that often). What I usually end up doing is diving into my open road case, pulling out a fresh set and hurredly changing the broken string.
Two things have happened:
A. - I have enough E's, A's, B's, & e's to macrame myself a nice, big, shiny (albeit uncomfortable) phosphor bronze hammock. ...and...
3. - I've spent enough money on full sets of strings to buy Madonna back her virginity (not to mention that I've amassed enough D'Addario "Players' Points" to redeem them for a new Audi - if ONLY they HAD one in the friggin' catalog!!!
I just need to be able to order some D's & G's at half dozen (or so) clips at a time.
Any sources out there? |

Location: Scotland | Cliff, if you are always breaking the same strings there are a couple of things to consider. Have you checked the bridge saddle? it may be sharp or worn at the point of contact and is cutting through the wrap. If the bridge is ok and you still break strings it may be worth trying other brands. The gauge of a wound string can be acheived by various diameters of wrap & core. It may be that a heavier wrap or heavier core will make the strings stand up better to your playing style, though this does subtely affect string tension & overall feel.

Strings are pretty much alike, call around till you find a dealer that has loose (individual) strings. Don't worry about the brand, if you break them frequently, the brand won't matter. New strings of any brand sound fine , unless they're flatwound. My son breaks strings in almost every set we play, it's the curse of being aggressive, he has even broken a bass guitar string which has given him legendary status, but you can hear him when he plays. It's the curse of playing with banjos.

Location: Scotland | Bailey, the brand issue is a tricky one because there are only a handful of actual string manufacturers. Those strings are then re-badged for various retail companies, so 10 apparently different sets could all be coming from the same place made to the same spec. But, say one manufacturer achieves a 22 gauge third string by using a .010 core with a .006 wrap but another a
gets the same guage by using a thinner core but heavier wrap wire or vice versa. The strings may sound pretty similar but tension & feel is affected, plus it may have an influence on the way the strings last.
Unfortunately manufacturers don't print the core & wrap guages on the packs, so it's down to suck it & see.

Actually I just got a big old package of catalogs and tech specs from D'Addario/Planet Waves via their website. I believe the string specs show the core/wrap ratios (I'll let you know).
I might just follow Cdubya's advice and contact D'Addario over here in nearby Long Island and enquire about purchasing some PhosBronze D/G's.

I know that D'Add does offer SOME strings individually, but not the PhosBronze.
I should probably just switch to a type that I can readily get indiv. replacements for, but I've always liked the sound of the PhosBronze and old habits are hard to break.
Although with all of the recent full-band gigs I've been doing, my "sweat factory" of a body just corrodes the piss out of 'em (if they don't break!).
Any suggestions out there for a less corrosive, good sounding string? (non-coated, can't stand the feel/sound of those things) |

Just what I was looking for!
Of course the cost of three individual strings'll cost me the same as a full set, but when combined with all the "leftovers" I got laying around, it'll be like getting three sets for the price of one. (Well, not really...but I'm just tryin' to "justify" here!).
