I've noticed all of the compliments about Warren Zevon on several strings on this site. My exposure to his music has been limited through his work through Linda Ronstadt and his occasional radio play. Could someone recommend an album or two of his, especially if there is any standout acoustic guitar on it. I've always seen him as this creative songwriter behind a piano.

The Rhino double anthology "I'll Sleep When I'm dead" covers the highlights of his entire career. There's another anthology due out this month. Of the studio albums avoid the 1970 debut "Wanted Dead Or Alive". "Transverse City" is patchy, "Mutineer" is hard work & the Solo Live album "Learning To Flinch" was a huge mistake. Everything else should be required listening for the entire planet. There's an interesting, and I think out of print collaboration with REM called "Hindu Love Gods" which is a bunch of outtakes from the "Sentimental Hygene" sessions. Two of his best albums, "The Envoy" & "Stand In The Fire" have never been reissued on CD but that may change soon, bearing in mind his terminal condition. If you only own one Zevon album it has to be "Excitable Boy". The latest album "My Rides Here" is vintage Zevon, sick, twisted, funny & tender, usually all at the same time.

Zevon has played a lot of electric over the years, but if you're looking for a cd by him that occasionally features acoustic guitar, try "Life'll Kill Ya." However (though I've grown to really love that cd), it's not classic Zevon stuff.
(As Paul T mentioned, Zevon plays a Custom Legend 12 string on Learning to Flinch, but I just listened to some of the songs from it again tonight [downloaded a few] and it's just not the best Zevon.)

One of his best, strongest albums in my opinion is Warren Zevon (self titled). My absolute favorite.

"Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School" is great too.

"Excitable Boy" has some of the ultimate Zevon classics, but "A Quiet, Normal Life" includes most of the highlights from that cd, plus many other carreer highlights.

Check out http://www.calendarlive.com/music/cl-et-boucher13sep13.story for a good article on Mr. Zevon. It seems he's working on some more music to record soon.

Also, Rhino Records is releasing a retrospective titled: "Genius: The Best of Warren Zevon," which is due in stores Oct. 15th

Man, this sucks. I hope everything goes easy for him.

Cliff George Harrison played on that album too. The "hold up" and "statesboro blues" were favs of mine.
I saw David a number of times all many years ago. the last times he was into "fiddle" and was making and repairing violins. I have not heard from him for a long time I am sure he still makes the "folk fest" circuit.

Yeah, Harrison co-wrote "Hold Up" w/Dave.
A few years ago, I heard that he came out of "fiddle retirement" and was performing again. I think he does a lot of college circuits.

(Speaking of which, I just got a postcard in the mail that Roger McGuinn is playing William Paterson College up here in Oct.)
