hey guys!,
glad to see i am not the only one in the world who loves ovation electrics.
i do have a question for you guys though.
i am the proud owner of a preacher 1281 and a viper 1271. i am not a collector by any means, i have these guitars to play and play them i do. so, the question is... i am interested in replacing the pickups (bridge pickups) in either or both guitars. i am wondering if and there are and where are pickups that would fit into the original rout of both guitars. also i am wondering if the preacher being stereo output has any effect on the range of pickup choices i have. i love the p90 sound and also the minihumbucker sound ( i am looking for those in particular to replace either the bridge or neck pickup on either guitar). the p90 would go into the neck position. i love modifying guitars and making them my own, so any help would be useful and greatly appreciated. thanks guys

Welcome! I'm not knowledgeable about the electrics, but there are plenty here who are. I'm sure they'll chime in soon. Sounds like you're a kindred spirit with Woody.

Whereabouts in FL are you?

nothing fits the cavities but Ovation pickups.
Now it you want to go changing pickguards, then you can do all kinds of things like Woody suggests.

For me, it's the hot bridge pickup that makes my 1271 what it is. You couldn't pay me enough to swap it out. That said, I got other guitars with mini-humbuckers, and Duncan JBs and 59s, and PhatCats, and P-90s, Kent Armstrong lipsticks, and EMGs, and whatever the hell we want to call what is in the Deacon 12. I guess what I'm really saying is just buy more guitars. :)

i could go buy more guitars, but the neck profile and playability of the viper and preacher have , so far in my experience, seem unsurpassed. i love playing and feeling these guitars (that sounded a little weird) but i want a semi-different sound while keeping the quality and playability of the ovation standards.

You need a breadwinner or a deacon. Unmodified. Difficult if not impossible to improve these guitars. Top-line in any era. I have one I've been playing for 27 years. I got into whammy bars, and that's the only reason I have anything else in a solidbody. So much tonal range you can't possibly even like all the sounds. Not a strat or a les paul, tho it can do some imitations tone-wise. And, as is said in the suit comercials, "You're gonna like the way you look."

You might want to check Mr Ovations (Sunny Ledges) e-store for NOS pickups.

new idea..there is a viper body and neck sold seperately on the bay right now.... i could probaly spend about 100 dollars and get them both. so instead of modding my current guitars , i could invest in a project guitar. the problem: no bridge or electronics come with the guitar..jsut the neck and body. so... what could be used as a replacement for that massive bridge rout. those things are super rare by themselves. i have ideas for pickups (massaging the routs to fit p90 at the neck since it is a little bit larger and finding an original bridge viper pickup and fitting it into the bridge position) but what the heck can i do for that bridge? maybe go bigsby and just mount in a creative way?
i just dont know.......HELP!!!!!!

You definitely need to chum up with Woody. He's Frankensteined some beautiful solid's.

Welcome to the OFC, sonofapreacherman.
I'm a PK too, BTW.

Take a cruise through the postings of myself, Crimson Lake, Seesquare and use search words like "projects".

Then, Paduan, you will be on the road to enlightenment...

BTW - I believe the days of $100 Vipers on Ebay are long gone, there's about a dozen of us that graze Ebay often.

o trust me i see the days of 100 dollar vipers are long gone...550-800 dollars is what i would spend for a complete and factory one..but i am looking at just a body with defects and a neck that needs a little attention. i think i can pull it off for about 100 maybe 150. we sahll see though, if i cant pull that off it is back to the drawing board. i looked through the postings but couldnt really find much help in them. i am truly concerned with the bridge rout that exist in these guitars. i know i can build in the pickups but i have never attempeted a "bridge" mod, especially one that would be so drastic.
