I've owned this great guitar for around 3+ years now...got it at a local pawnshop. I think its a mid-'70s...anyway, its in great shape, and I've been thinking about upgrading the electronics.

I know very little about what electronics are currently in it, but they do work well....it uses the concentric controls by the neck.

1. Would newer electronics make a big difference in plugged in sound quality compared to what I have, or should I leave it alone? What would I gain...I'm very unfamiliar with current Ovation pre-amps and piezo technology.

2. Would Ovation have to replace the bridge as well?

Also, on the cosmetic / feature side, what made the GC models different, besides the truss rod cover?

All info is appreciated, I see that cwk2 lives in Jacksonville as well....

Thanks!

The Glen is basically a legend with a shallow bowl, what is now called mid depth.

If it were me... I would stay with the FET preamp you have with the Vol and tone on one stacked pot. Those preamps sound great, and you won't have to cut your lovely old guitar up. Yes they don't have the modern bells and whistles, but, they have the sound.

I'm a firm beleiver in leaving the older guitars as they are, the electronics are basic but work fine. With the newer pre's everything from the 3-band FET3 to the Optima are the same size & use the same mounting, so it's no big deal to upgrade. The latest pre's are modular & designed to be interchangeable & upgradeable. If you need extra EQ or feedback control for your GC there's loads of outboard gear which will do a better job for considerably less than the cost of a factory preamp upgrade. Having said that, the onboard tuners are very cool.

The GC's also had a bracing pattern unique to that model...I think it was called VT-8 but the exact name escapes me at the moment.

The bracing was VT-8, all shallow-bowls models from this era, GC, Artist & Country Artist had this pattern bracing. The GC went to the A patten in the early 80's, the other 2 stayed with the VT-8

Thanks for the advice, and, based on that, my inclination is to leave it alone, there's a loose cable guide inside that I've needed to reglue forever, but other than that, its good to go.

I do like the sound of the current pre-amp..any advice on some outboard gear for additional tone-shaping? Ex. Boss AD-3/5? LR Baggs Para DI? I'm primarily a electric player, but I have a need to use the GC more often now in a PA situation. I have a POD, but doubt that I can get good acoustic tone out of it.

Also, are the necks on the GCs different? Seems like mine has more pieces to it than others I've seen.

Pods suck for acoustic. Two pieces of equipment which I cannot recommend highly enough are the Boss AD5 and the LR Baggs Para-acoustic DI, both of which you mentioned and both will do a great job with your GC. The AD3 is OK-ish. Other stuff worth checking out is the Fishman dual Parametric & the Yamaha AG Stomp.

In the early days all US Ovations had the 5-piece neck, these days lower-end USA guitars & the imports are 2-piece.

No, please tell me how you REALLY feel about the POD's acoustic abilities...

I pretty well knew this, I'll probably go direct to the board until I can get my hands on the Boss or the Baggs.

Thanks!
