Gibson (Oberheim) Echoplex is the best, most professional, and most expensive.

Numerous options downwards from there.

There's a few. The Gibson Echoplex is certainly one of the most expensive, whether it's the best and most professional is highly debateable. Incidentally, Gibson killed Oberhiem in the mid-80's, just one of a number of brands they have acquired and destroyed.

The Boss RC20 is probably the market leader and they have a version either side of that in terms of price and spec. Then there's the Digitech, Akai and a bunch of others. The new Line6 JM4 looks pretty impressive, and it's a lot cheaper than the Echoplex

Thanks! I see a more compact pedal by Boss called the RC 2. Is there any disadvantage here? Only costs 99!

As a tangent, can the boss RC-2 or RC-20 be used as a simple delay, or is it only loops?

Dobro, where is the RC-2 only $99? That is a good price.

I use the Boss RC-20. I don't believe it has any delay effects. For live solo intrumental work, it works great.

Don't mind me, Fly. I still don't know how to interpret what goes on with EBay. The list price is almost 100 over what I said...

As far as I'm concerned, the MASTER of looping is a local guy here in Jersey named Robert Matarazzo. He uses (2) Boss RC20XLs, one for his guitar one for his voice. I've never heard anything like what this guy does. He is truly unique, and a brilliant songwriter too.

He will create his own unique tempo from scratch by banging on his guitar in different places, then add melody lines, then start playing rhythm guitar, start layering his voice on the chorus's of the song (by the second or third time the chorus comes around there are 3-4 harmonies layered), then play an 'electric lead' over it, sometimes add a psuedo bass line...within minutes one guy has created the sound of an entire band...it's astounding.

Aside from looping, Robert has an astonishing vocal range, and his songs are fantastic, stand alone, without all the looping hoopla.

Here is a link to Youtube...though I have to say this performance does not touch on his real creativity with looping, but you'll get the idea anyway. He is using the RC-20's own 'bass drum' click track for this song, which is atypical for him, and this song does not layer his vocal harmonies.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A603AVvPXaM

The 'odd' looking guitar is a Godin Multiac Steel Duet...an impressive acoustic guitar for live performance.

The Boss RC-20XL can layer up to 10 tracks.

Enjoy the clip!

I've used them all..the Gibson is NOT user freindly & and does not have near enough memory..I'm using 2 Boss RC-20XLs..they'll hold 16 minutes each...I like the Boomerang plus..it is 2 channels/tracks plus stacking like all the others..However, they're coming out with a 4-6 track that has multiple stacking capabilities & I'm sure it will be awesome and not nearly expensive as the Boss RC-50..I also found the Digitech JamMan nice, but not as easy to use as the RC-20s..The RC-2 needed too many extras to do what the others would & the RC- 50, to me was totally worthless, just more expensive & I could do more with 2 RC-20s..My 2 cents...:-) Dan

True, the Gibson unit is beginning to become a bit dated and long in the tooth.

Yeah, but nothing can do what the Gibson can do...it isn't all about memory for everyone, it is about live manipulation of the loop too.

I like the Line 6 DL4, and the Line 6 M13 for on the fly looping...especially non-rhythmic loops. I have a Boss RC-2 as well, but some functions are difficult without an external pedal. Still for purely practice, the RC-2 is hard to beat. I wouldn't choose it as my only live looper though.

You may want to check out the looper's HQ: www.loopersdelight.com
and a page which compares loopers:

I am now the proud owner of the Boss RC-2 and can say that, with all the options, it there is PLENTY loopage there for me. Thanks for the input!
