Location: Zion, Illinois | I just picked up my UK-II from a local music store. I took it in because I had a little string buzzing at certain frets. They said they would check give it their standard set-up. They would check it, adjust the neck, check & clean the electronics, and adjust the intonation.
The one thing I wanted them to do was to lower the action.
I picked it up, brought it home and check it out (I couldn't check it out there, they were closing and besides the guy who worked on it wasn't there. They have a 30 day return policy), no more buzzing but I seems to me that the action is higher now!
I looked it over and I can't figure out how to lower the action on this guitar. What is the standard high for the strings. I will take it back later this week, but I was just wondering. I think I saw it listing on this board a few months ago, but I couldn't find it.

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I'm sure someone could give you the specs, but from what you type.. it sounds like someone just did the 'ol.. raise the bridge to make the buzzing stop instead of actually setting up the guitar. Those two big screws in the bridge raise and lower it. I have never actually adjusted any of my UKII's, but there is a truss rod cover, so I'll assume there is a rod in there. The guitar may also need to have the frets "dressed" a little.. (naked frets are just to naughty).. All of this is actually pretty easy to do yourself if you have a little patience and a good set of instructions to follow. It's quite satisfying to set up your own guitar so it play like Buttah!!! |

any fret dressing tips amongst our talented contributors? how about getting a troublesome fret to stay down? i am still playing with a pocket laser pointer to pick up high frets. the little laser pocket keychains like harbor freight sells (~$5) could be easily adapted to a small spring clamp at the sound hole. ideally, a tiny fiber optic gooseneck that clipped to the string with the beam off center in the head so the head of the gooseneck could be rotated for height adjustment. paul t, take this one and make a million (pesos?) with it. if nothing else, they would be good to drive your cat nuts. ours will chase the red spot for hours. |

I'm sorry, I don't understand.
One more thing I noticed. There is a screw in the back of the body that goes through the body and through to bridge. It looks like he tightened the screw so that the rear end of bridge is pushed way up. Is this the correct thing to do?

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | That screw actually holds the back of the bridge down. The strings pull... the screw holds it back. I'm sure there is a "correct" angle, but I always set mine so the string make just enough of an arch over the saddles to stay inplace, and enough clearance to re-string the guitar easily. |

Location: Scotland | The best idea with the rear screw is, as Miles suggests, to pull the bridge into the body but allow access for re-stringing, otherwise a simple a job becomes a nightmare, especially at a gig.

Location: Zion, Illinois | I think my guitar is messed up. That screw that goes through the body to hold the bridge down seems stripped.
I'm probably going to have to take it to an authorized Ovation repair shop. I don't know if this was a pre-existing condition, so I can't go back and yell at that shop where I took it to be set up. But I'll never take them another guitar. They should have said SOMETHING!
Guess I won't be playing electric for quite a while.
