Saw an interesting guitar a couple of weeks ago in San Diego. It was a dreadnaught size guitar with a fiberglass back on it, similar to an Ovation, but shaped more like a regular wood back.

I was told that Bob Taylor used to work for Ovation and when he started making guitars, he made about 20 like this. Ovation came in, told him he had to stop and broke his molds. I don't know how much of this is true. Has anybody else heard anything along these lines?

The guitar had a good sound to it. The string were old so I didin't get a great sense of how good it might be, but overall, I thought it was a pretty good sounding guitar.

There were a few guitar makers who attempted the fiberglass bowl design, however short lived..I had a Gibson fiberglass bowlback once..We used to call it the "Gibsovation"..Didn't sound that good..Just like almost every other Gibson i have played!!
Bill, do you remember those? I imagine Ovation sent Gibson a nasty letter....

The Gibson wasn't the Ovation shape so there wasn't a problem. It died it's own death.

Al, are you referring to the "Bozo" who made guitars for Leo Kottke, many years ago? Is he still making guitars, or alive, for that matter?

Do a search here on "Bozo" and you'll get the entire conversation that was on this very topic a few months ago.
