Not a difficult question. Why no answers?

Following up on my previous posting after more searching for information:
I have a Ovation 12 string. It was given to me as a birthday gift between 1976-1978, although I am not sure. It is acoustic, hollow body, round back, deep bowl--I think, pearl tuing pegs, 12 fret clear, non-cutaway, slotted headstock, natural finish, with a built in pickup and one knob volume control. There is a number inside near where the neck joins the body on the inside of the back facing out towards the sound hole (I am assuming this is the serial number. The number is 121217 (I am also assuming this means the guuitar was manufactured between Sept 1977 and April 1978 based on information from the Ovation Website--"cracking the code"). The sticker that is supposed to be right inside the hole has been torn off. The guitar has 19 frets. The guitar looks exactly like the Glen Cambell 1118-4 12 String with the following differences--No Glen Campbell signature or anything else on the Truss Rod cover, the 17th fret does not have any inlay or any other marking and the 15th fret has a round pearl inlay as opposed to a diamond shaped pearl inlay. I am very interested to find out the model name, number etc. Can anyone help me with this. Thanks

Someone will probably give you an opinion on this guitar soon, we just saw something very close on ebay on a post in the last day or so. Check those posts as I forgot to get which one it was before I answered (It is "Adamas Ebay alert" and look at the second guitar in the post.

My better judgement says not to bother answering this, as it's been cross-posted so many times, but let's play nice, eh?

The guitar is a 1615 Pacemaker. There were 3 models of 12-string at that time. The superficial differences are these: If it has an unbound neck & chrome machines it's a 1615 Pacemaker. A bound neck & gold machines would make it a 1618 Glen Campbell. The addition of abalone purfling & a carved bridge makes it a 1658 Custom Legend.

What is the difference between a "bound neck" and other types of neck? Sorry for the ignorance.

A bound neck has white or ivoroid binding around the edge of the fingerboard.

Sorry for anoter ignorant question:
You said "abalone purfling, pearloid buttons & a carved bridge makes it a 1658 Custom Legend. " What is/or where on the guitar would the abalone purfling and the pearloid buttons be? Could you also explain what a carved bridge on the 1658 Custom Legend looks like-- Sorry to bother you but you obviously know what you are talking about.

Thanks

I shouldn't answer questions when I have a hangover, all Ovation 12-strings have pearloid tuner buttons. Do a google image search on Custom Legend or take a look on ebay, you should find a pic which will explain the carved bridge & abalone purfling better than a description.

What did you do to end up with a hangover? As we age, aren't we supposed to be past that stuff? Actually, the older I get, the less booze it takes to put me there.

As we age? I may be getting older, but I'm not growing up. I had a deep & meaningful discussion with 2 bottles of Chilean Merlot & half a bottle of Tequila. It made sense at the time.

A little late in the day in the UK to be hungover still don't you think? Anyway, I did an image search on google like you suggested for Custom Legend and I understand what you mean. I also searched images on google for "12 string ovation". There was a picture of the Byrds at this link: www.urban.ne.jp/home/ koa7/byrds.htm
Roger McGuinn, far left, is holding a 12 string that looks exactly like mine. While the year is probably different, would you say I have a Pacemaker 1615 if I got it in 1978(as you said earlier)?

A 1615 is an acoustic electric Pacemaker while a 1116 is a straight acoustic.

Thanks for pointing that out. I had not realized the guitar McGuinn had was not an acoustic electric.

Not only is that Roger McGuinn with a Pacemaker, but that's the late, great & sorely missed Clarence White with a 1621 Artist (I think, the picture isn't too clear) Clarence is associated with the enlarged-soundhole Martin D28 now owned by Tony Rice (another former Ovation player) I had no idea that McGuinn or Clarenc used Ovations. Clarence was a monster player and has been a huge influence for me, hence my 2 B-bender equipped Vipers. Bill, how come you guys didn't capatalise on this? I dont think I've ever seen any Ovation promo stuff on these 2 Icons using Ovation.

Paul, you got your guitars wrong,a 1615 is a 12 string pacemaker but a 1116 is a classical nylon string..Did you mean 1115 non electric pacemaker?

Did we all learn something here, or not? This has been a very interesting thread. Is there more to come? Chilean Merlot and tequila can lead to an inadvertant speaking in spanish tongues with a British accent, and playing flamenco touched by Andean folk.

Paul;

That wouldn't by any chance have been "Undaragga" Merlot was it? This stuff's been following me around for the past two weeks! My boss had given me a bottle of it (first time I'd ever seen it), had a couple bottles of it at a restaurant in Manhattan last week, and last night when I saw "Yes" at NJPAC, they had it at the bars (had five glasses). Good stuff and reasonable priced.

Speaking of the Yes show, did you ever hear of a UK band called "Porcupine Tree"? They were Yes' "warmup" band. eeeesch!!(Halfway through the second song I was prompted to return to the bar for three more of the aforementioned Merlots!).

Cliff, I've heard of Porcupine Tree but haven't heard any of their stuff. I asked some of my students about them, they weren't very complimentary. Haven't seen that particular wine over here but I'll keep an eye out for it, I love Chilean wine.

Porcupine Tree:
Picture Kurt Cobain attempting to emulate 30-year-old Steve Hackett/Genesis songs with the excessive use of a wah-wah pedal.

My time was better spent with the merlot waiting for Yes.
