As far as the next lesson on how to bend over ... methinks they're be a lot suggestions from this board. :D |

The following intructions are NOT for the faint of heart.
During the early 80's I played heavier pop rock. I didn't have a trem on my Viper at that time.. (I eventuially retrofitted and Kahler). The trick is easiest to do on notes/chords located within the first 5 frets, or just an open harmonic pulse.. (like the VanHalen version of Pretty Woman or Deep Purple's smoke on the Water or that annoying pulsed hold note in Boston's More than a Feeling)..
Play the note... insure the lower bout of the guitar is supported by your hip, apply pressure with your right hand and to the upper-bout.. BUT JUST A LITTLE... YOU ARE BENDING THE NECK AT THE MOUNTING POINT AND CAN SNAP THE NECK RIGHT OFF THE GUITAR IF YOU PUSH TO HARD!!!!!
I never broke the guitar... and in fact, those Viper necks are so sturdy, I never needed an adjustment for many years.
Like I said... above.. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!! YOU CAN BREAK YOUR GUITAR and Don't camplain to me.
I still do this trick on occasion.. but and I've seen others do it... but BE CAREFUL... |

Location: Scotland | Al, I suspect you are just teasing. You can bend notes up with your fingers, but you can't lower pitch, nor can you bend all six-strings simultaneously. I don't mind trems, (which strictly speaking should be called vibratos, as tremelo is a variation in volume, not pitch) but I'm more of a Bigsby wiggle kinda guy, rather than a Floyd-Rose divebomber. |

Location: Canada | Anyone played with a Trans-Trem? I've got to say that Steinberger trems are the best ones in my experience. I'd fit my Ultra GS with one if they weren't so darn expensive! |

Location: NJ | Paul I can simulate a trem with some chords. It comes from years of playing guitars without trems.
btw it is funny how you listen to stuff and develop a style. I never knew that you could pick with your fingers and "fingerpicked" with a pick trying to figure out how they got all those notes so quickly.
I developed a sort of pantamine slide not realizing that people used metal or glass for slides.
I know you probably don't believe me but there is a lot that can be accomplished just with your hands how you position the pick and how you attack the notes. sorry if I sounded sarcastic.

Location: Scotland | Al, I appreciate that personal techniques can be devoloped to emulate sounds, but just because you do that doesn't make if "right" or appropriate for other players. Your statements "real players don't need trems" and "learn to bend with your fingers" do not make any sense to me as both a musician and a teacher.
As for vibrato systems on Ovation solidbodies; My Bigsby-equipped Tornado was in the shop recently having the pickups potted & I used my UK11 for a few gigs instead. I found I missed the Bigsby so I started looking for a possible trem for the UK2. I found this:

This is a direct replacement for LP style tailpieces and looks like it will also work with the earlier wrapover-type LP bridge. Gibson tailpieces & Ovation bridge-posts share identical spacing, so if I'm right (and it's perfectly possible that I'm way off here) this will work with any USA Ovation solid. I have one on the way, so I'll keep you posted.

Location: SoCal | I read an interveiw with Vince Gill (damn good guitar player) a while back. Early in his career, he heard what he thought was a straight electric guitar and he learned to emulate those parts. It was only later that he found out the guitar player was using a B bender to get those sounds.

Location: Canada | woohoo, I just replaced the original Dimarzio Humbucker in my Ultra GS(the model which only houses a single Humbucker)with an EMG 89 Active Dual Mode Humbucker and it sounds amazing on both Humbucker and Single Coil mode! |
