By basic understanding is that all tops start out the same, either unidirectional or crossweave. The smooth tops get finished in a "clearcoat" looking material. The textured tops are finished in a textured paint. The painted tops are thinner and more responsive and to most peoples ears sound superior (volume, clarity, depth, sustain, ...) Personally if I had to choose, I'd pick a textured top 10 times out of 10 vs. a smoothie.
A very interesting "hybrid" and one of the best sounding Adamas guitars out there is the Adamas Export models that Al sells. Normally a textured top Adamas is completely painted, usually in some kind of burst like light blue in the middle and dark blue around the edge. But these export models are what I call "bare-burst". They are bare unpainted crossweave in the center region and blue (or red) burst around the outer part. The sound is AMAZING and they sell for around a grand. I gave mine to my son in NYC who absolutely loves it (and I miss it).
