I have Celebrity CC01, full body. I personally believe Ovation has a distinctive sound (which I like), and I was wondering what types of strings bring out the best?
I realize that this may be related to personal taste, but I am very interested to find options (I only been playing for a few months).

Thanks!

I was using phosper bronze, medium gauge D'Addario or Adamas. I now use Elixer polyweb, medium gauge. Cost twice as much and last 3 times as long. I believe that medium gauge brings out the best in an Ovation 6 string.

I am using light gauge right now. What should I expect if I go to medium?

I've been experimenting with string lately. I bought 4 packs of phosphor bronze medium gauge strings from stringthis.com. I put a set on my wooden-topped Elite and they sounded great. I then put a set on my Adamas and I didn't like the sound at all.

I then ordered some strings from webstrings.com. I picked up a pack of Bluegrass gauge 80/20 bronze and they sounded great. The 80/20 sounded deeper / more mellow. Another string I tried recently where Medium Silk & Steel LaBella's. They were very good for finger picking.

So to answer your question, it depends on the guitar and the kind of music/sound you want to make.

ELIXER! These strings have done wonders for me. I use to have to change strings all the time. My hands are really hard on strings, and they would go dead in no time. Now I use elixer 12-54, and they are great. My Adamas has great tone for along time. I just can't say enough good things about these strings...Paul Hebert

I've used Kaman Adamas Phosper Bronze for some time, but recently switched to Di'Addario EXP16 Phosper Bronze, for my Elite. Kinda like the EXP strings though as my hands get sweaty and they are still lasting well.
Oh, and don't forget to wipe the strings after playing each time. It's a good habit that will make any string sound great on an Ovation!

If most of us are using medium strings, why is Ovation ship all its guitars with light strings?

Please, no answers like because:
They sound the best when playing light rock.
They’re easier to see in the dark.
They last longer than kite string.
They have fewer calories.
They were cheaper than the reprinting all the catalogs to add *(strings not included)

A classy answer though, something like Dave’s explanation of where the expression ‘Dead as a Doornail’ came from, would be good.

Well you've already given all the good anawers.

I suspect that Ovations ship with light gauge strings is the same reason most manufacturers do that. They are easier to play for many people that will be playing the guitars in the stores.

Or it might be a federal law, I'm really not certain.

"string this" sells martin strings in bulk. less than $2 a set in quantity. i change strings every week on guitars i use for gigs, and this is the economical solution to get good quality strings. i like phosphor bronze more than the 80-20's for acoustic and choose 12's. for electric i use 10's in nickel wound, also from string this. they also allow you to make custom sets and to stock up on singles you might tend to break. string this was a tip from paul t in an earlier post and they are now my main supplier. i change 3-5 sets a week so the savings really add up and the strings are good quality.

I was suprised when my new 1687 was shipped with D'Addario strings (12's).

I thought Ovation would be promoting their own brand.

...or maybe they're D'Addario's as well.

Also check out...

WEB STRINGS

Very good strings, quick shipment. They sent me the wrong 12-strings last week (I wanted 80/20 they sent phosphor bronze). They told me to keep the PB's as a back-up and send me the 80/20's at no cost within a couple of days.

kurt, living on the coast at 20 N latitude makes frequent string changes necessary to avoid those embarrasing leads when your string breaks at just the wromg time.
