I was wondering through the pawn shop again (what else to do on the frozen tundra, at least it's warm!), I thought I would take a closer look at an Ovation I saw last summer. What caught my eye, was the price being at $129.00. It is a USA Made/Model 1139, which according to the reference link, makes it a Special Balladeer. It's Sunburst, with a few finish cracks. Appears to have a composite or laminated neck. Strictly acoustic, and seemed to be a mid-depth bowl, but had a great sound. The action was a touch high. I asked about it, and my friend that runs the music dept. said he marked it down because he found out the truss rod was snapped.

Worth $129.00? I have no idea what to do with a broken truss rod, so I'm not too interested. Any opinions?

No thoughts? Is the 1139 a good guitar? Is replacing a truss rod a major, or spendy deal?

Norse, if it has a Urethane/Ali neck with a rosewood 'board it doesn't have a truss-rod. It's basically a late model Matrix/early Ultra.

Interesting Paul,

It does have a hole drilled out on the brace below the soundhole, where one would use a wrench to adjust it. The neck is definitely not wood, plastic looking, the head stock is formed plastic or resin, and the chrome machine heads have a black plastic/rubber around the base of them.

Perhaps the brace with the adjustment hole is just used as it's part of the standard face bracing.

Would a serial number help determine if it indeed does not have a truss rod? I can get that easy enough. Perhaps it may be worth the money if this is the case.

Norse(interesting, would action adjustment be made soley by the saddle/shims then?)man1

Norse, If it's a Urelite neck there is definately no rod. The core of the neck is a solid aluminum casting, based on the K-bar.

Thanks for the info Paul, I think I will take another look at the guitar this weekend, get the serial number, and make sure it is a Urelite neck. Perhaps $129.00 is a bargain!
