Location: Lafayette, Louisiana | Hello everyone. I have noticed a few posts about the tops of older Ovations developing cracks. I have a white 1990 Custom Balladeer that is in perfect condtion. My question is, will it stay like that? The top does not have a scratch on it, and the person I got the guitar from had the guitar in a room leaning against a wall with no case for years. I just got an Ovation hard shell case for it, so now I don't worry about it as much. Now that the guitar is 13 years old, is it possible it will never develope top cracks? I live in humid southern Louisiana, does that have something to do with it? I sure hope the top never cracks. Thanks...Paul Hebert |

As for the guitar, I don't know. I have lived in the Chicago area all my life and I still have two guitars I bought in 1973 & 74, one being my Glen Campbell 12-string. Never had any problems with cracks.
I bought a Custom Legend from a guy in California off of E-Bay a couple of years ago. It lasted 1 month before the top cracked due to our dry winter weather. It is so dry here today that while I was at work filling out paperwork, my nose suddenly started dripping blood.
I hope the weather in Louisiana is nicer towards guitars. I just wonder what the effects of too much humidity might do to a guitar.

Location: Lafayette, Louisiana | Bradley, the guitar spent years leaning against a wall before I found it. I have no idea what happened to the the original case. Of course the strings were rusty, and the battery was corroded, but the actual guitar was perfect. And even the black neck had no scratches, and the black headstock was perfect. It held togther well in that room all these years, I just hope it does the same as I take it out and play it at different places..Paul Hebert |

Most problems that I've seen with top cracks on Ovations has been in that thick finish they use.
It tends to be the dry weather which is the real danger in tops cracking.
Having visited your part of the US, I can say that your weather is very similar to what we get in this part of Australia and I've never had any problems whatsoever in twenty years owning Ovations. In fact I've seen the opposite here, ie, guitars which have swollen due to taking on too much moisture during our hummid summers.
If your worried, buy a little humidifier which can also have the effect of soaking up excess moisture and always keep your guitar in it's case of course. |
