| How would I know if my guitar has a Urethane Oil Neck or a Gloss Finished Neck?
Does anyone here wax their guitar neck? Is it important?What kind of wax should I use? How often should I use it? |

Location: Las Cruces, NM | The only thing I've ever used on a neck was a cleaner/polish like Martin or the Dunlop everybody here is touting. Usually the neck finish is designed to let the hand slide up and down with little friction, wax might degrade that "feel".

I was reading my O's manual and they said to use wax every month or so if your guitar has a Urethane Oil Neck. |

Yes, you caught me at it again. I'll be darned, I never heard of the Urethene Oil Neck, this is beyond my experience maybe one of the collectors here will clear this up. All of my guitars are just regular finished necks, and as I said I just keep them clean. If there is some wax that will improve the neck, it's time we knew about it.

Location: SoCal | The older necks had a clear or "gloss" neck. It was the finish used. In the mid 80's Ovation started going with the natural finish on the neck. I much prefer the older gloss neck. I think that I have the terms right.
However, Big Blue (my Adamas 12 string) has the natural finish neck. The owners manual says to use a good furniture was or paste on it occassionally. I'm not good about it and haven't noticed a problem, but I do have a can of paste wax around here somewhere and will use it every once in a while. |

| This is what it says on the manual...
The Hand Rubbed Urethane Oil Neck
This neck finish is available on most Ovation models. If your guitar has it, you will notice a natural wood feel on the neck. It required a higher level of maintenance than a gloss finished neck.
Approximately once a month, if you play daily, you will want to apply a commercially available wax. We recommend...Trewax.Lunmarks Clear Paste Wax. Butche's Bowling Alley Paste Wax.
No one here applies wax to their guitars. I guess waxxing the neck isn't important. Oh well...I'll use a polish or something.

Location: Rockaway NJ | all of my ovations have the urathane oil neck and i use butchers bowling alley way on them as the manual says to do. it gives them a nice finish and protects them as well. |

Location: Gardnerville Nevada | I just treated the urethane-rubbed neck of my recently obtained '94 Collector with Trewax clear paste wax as recommended in owner's manual. I thought the neck looked clean prior to the treatment but the wax removed a surprising amount of dark grime. After buffing the neck was nice and slick. If you haven't used one of the recommended paste waxes yet I'd recommend it. |

Location: NJ | Butcher's paste wax is pretty available in any good hardware store or supermarket. I remember when I was a kid my mom used to use it on hardwood floors (stuff is GREAT!), but you don't wanna be walkin' around in socks after waxin' the floors with THIS stuff! :eek: |

Location: Virginia | I use TRE wax. As a matter of fact, I had to get such a large can of it, I now use it on my furniture at home also. Good stuff! |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Why would anything be put on the "back" of neck. I would think clean it, but nothing else. Again I use the pool cue reference. I use an extra-lite like a kitchen scrubby, but finer on my cue's. I just wipe down the neck of the guitar, and clean if necessary. |

Location: Gardnerville Nevada | People are waxing the urethane rubbed necks of their Ovations because the manufacturer recommends it in the owner's manual.
I wouldn't wax gloss finished necks (such as on older Ovations) or satin finished necks (such as on Martins). These are different finishes than the newer Ovations.
My 1994 Ovation has the urethane rubbed neck which gives it a natural unfinished wood feel. Because of this it attracts a lot of skin oil and therefore dirt.
IMHO using one of the waxes recommended by Ovation on a regular basis keeps the neck clean and gives it a nice slick feel.
As mention by a previous poster, I also remember when my mom used to use paste wax on the floor (back in the days when mom's did that kind of thing).
Couldn't wait to get my socks on 'cause I could slide clear across the room with little head start.
Does the same thing to my guitar neck. |
