Location: Dallas, GA, USA | Everybody here likes to listen to music, and truth be told we all like some music that would make the others give us a hard time. As a musician, who are you embarassed to admit that you listen to?
I'll start...
I have CDs in my truck by Cledus T Judd (sort of like a country Weird Al Yankovic), the Bee Gees, and the Violent Femmes. I also sat here earlier and played along with most of the first album of Hot August Night by Neil Diamond. Porcupine Pie was particularly choice.

Location: Caribou, ME | Well, I'll tell you what I have been known to listen to, and you can judge for yourself if anything is worthy of ridicule: bagpipes, sitar, Pete Seeger, old Sun rockabilly, "If I were a Rich Man", David Lindley, Bloodrock, the Big Bopper, surf instrumentals, Rednex, Sue Foley, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Primus, Sex Pistols, obscure reggae, Frank Sinatra, Junior Brown, Stompin' Tom Connors, Kid Rock, Ramones, Bow Wow Wow, the Specials, The B-52s, Oingo Boingo, The Plastics, The Stanley Brothers, Beausoleil, Stevie Ray, The Waitresses, Cat Stevens (or whatever his name is this week), Thorogood, Merle Travis, Glenn Miller..... on and on.
You point really hit home; we ALL listen to music that, if our friends saw the cd on the coffee table, "Uh, that's my sister's, she left it here...". But the way I figure it, if it sounds good to YOUR ears, then it's good music! Don't ever be ashamed of what stirs ya!

Hank Thompson with the original Brazos Valley Boys from the same Austin CL program that the above Ray Price show was on.
On and on, my vice is taping anything that has music in it, so I am surrounded by videotapes of Frank Sinatra, his daughter, etc. and I don't play CDs as much as videos as my TV is connected to a good stereo.

When you mentioned Nancy Sinatra, I couldn't help but reply...
Last year one Saturday my wife had the radio on an oldies station from Weatherford, TX - it's not very powerful and I can seldom pick it up, I'm not even sure if they still have the same programing, anyway, the DJ played Sugartown a song that had long been lost in the haze of my memory - until hearing it then. I just loved that song when I was a kid. I started searching the internet for lytrics/tab/fan info. I found the lyrics and figured out the progression, now if I can just convince the rest of the band that WE MUST PLAY THIS SONG!!
More to the point, on a subsequent search I found that Nancy has her own web site (I don't think it was up when I first started searching) and you can listen to all the hits!! And guys, YOU GOT TO SEE THE PHOTOS! :D

You are right, I secretly put on an Englebert album and croon to the wife at times. It may not be kosher but it does work except when we go to a party and my wife says "Bailey sings just like Englebert, listen to this". How many cases of sudden laryngitis can a person get away with and remain credible? |
