Help! My Legend began makeing strange noises this past weekend. It sounds like a blown speaker which is what I thought it was while I was playing but have since discovered that it is the guitar. I changed the battery and strings on Friday but didn't notice anything until I played on Sunday thru the PA. I have since put another new battery in but it still sounds like a little mixed in distortion. The only other thing is the strings. Has anyone ever had a "faulty" set of strings? It has the Optima preamp. Any ideas?

Insure the battery is indeed a new battery (sometimes even ones in a new package can be bad) and also insure the volume is fairly low. The Ovation preamps can put out a decent signal, enough to overdrive a PA channel easily.

Faulty strings are usually only one of the strings, not all of them. Mostly you'll get either a dead or buzzy string (loose windings) or one that won't intonate right (non-uniform diameter).
Maybe something got loosened during the string/battery change?

Make sure also that when you "unplug" the guitar that the amp is powering off. You could very well be putting in good, new batteries that might be draining overnight. Just a thought.

While I never had this problem with my ovation, I did have it with my telecaster, and it was attributale to a lose wire in that area around the where the tone/volume controls are. Once identified I just soldered the wire back on, problem solved. So that's the first thing I'd check, my wire conections, starting from the pickup all the way thru to the wire you plug your amp. Could be you just need a new amp cable.
Good Luck.

Try it on phantom power, if the problem goes away it's the battery.

A Longshot - Try adjusting the notch filter on your Optima. There may be a conflict with your amp that is causing interference at certain settings.
