I am tossing around the idea of getting a used 2003 Adamas cvt 12 string. There's not one in my area to try out, so I'm looking for input.

My "dilemma" has to do with the electronics, (this one has the new op50). I've read on threads "opinions" that the new electronics aren't really different from the "old" ones. Yet, my experience says different.

The new OP50 on my new custom legend seems to sonically whoop the ass of that on my older custom legend. I get a sound I LOVE out of the new one, with very little eq adjustment. With the older one I have to boost the shit out of, and still don't get nearly the same bass response. It doesn't seem logical that there should be that dramatic a difference in the 2 guitars, since they are so similar, other than the electronics. In fact, this new custom legend whoops the ass of all my ovations. (I LOVE THIS GUITAR!)

I'd have to sell my adamas smt 12 string (old electronics) to get this adamas cvt 12 string. Again they are very similar guitars-construction and body size. My hopes are that I will have the same experience with the OP50 output in this guitar too.

Anyone have an opinion or guidance? Is it worth it?

Thanks,
Johnny

I prefer the cvt over the smt. I also thing there is not any difference in the preamps aside from packaging BUT what you really need to do is come down here and try a textured top 12 string that I have. I am positive it will hands down beat the cvt or smt. Why don't you hook up with cliff he is looking at a different 12 string I have come down play a few guitars hang out and form some opinions on your own.

Johnny, I have an Op50 on my Custom Folkore & an Optima on my SMT. The HI-Z unbalanced output of the Optima seems a little hotter than the Op50, other than that I can't hear a whole lot of difference. I don't think the new pre's sound different to the one's they replaced, but they are very different to the older Fet3's. The older pre's are fine, you just need to work a little harder to get the best out of them. A major difference between the new preamps & the older ones has nothing to do with sound. The older pres have metal cases & are pretty heavy. Most people who play an Ovation for the first time comment on the weight of the guitatrs. The new pres are smaller & lighter.

Thanks a whole bunch guys, as always your info is very valuable to me.

I stopped at guitar center on the way home from work last night, and tried an adamas cvt 6 string (they didn't have a 12) with an op50, and as you stated, there really wasn't much difference in the sound to the pre in my smt. But I could tell a dramatic difference immediately when I plugged my custom legend in at the store...like I said, angels sang.

I guess it's just specifically the design of my custom legend that really works for me. That baby has serious balls that pack wicked punch.

Al...a spin down to you with Cliff would be AWESOME! Perhaps soon we could hop in Cliff's official "Ovation Cruiser" and head to your neck of the woods.

Thanks again,
Johnny
