Location: Fort Worth, Texas | I saw one once at Mars music, when they were having thier bankruptcy sale (several months ago). It was cool, somewhat cumbersome. Seems like I remember the strings on it being way old and all out of tune, so I set it back down and picked up the ME 12 string (should have spent the money then!) to check out..... |

Location: Central Oregon | My wife got a double DVD of Led Zepplen for her birthday from her brother last week. (EXCELLENT STUFF, BTW! Mostly digitized from old 16mm film, some of it bootleg, & overlayed with studio tracks, they did a really remarkable job of blending them together.) I had always wondered how Jimmy Page got the sound he got in Stairway to Heaven, now I know- he was playing a double neck SG (6 string/12 string) & switching back & forth. I haven't watched it all yet. It still amazes me how a guy as young as he was in '72 could get that damned GOOD! Very impressive! Grab a copy if you get a chance!

Location: NJ | Page often used to play on the 6-string neck and leaving the the 12-string neck turned "on", utilized the sympathetic vibration of the strings. I have some pics somewhere from the Plant/Page "UnLedded" tour where he played a black custom-made Ovation double-neck. |

Location: Scotland | Many years ago, a friend of mine who worked in a guitar store found a piece of chrome pipe about a foot long. He put it in a display cabinet along with a bunch of pedals & stuff and labelled it as a "slide for doubleneck guitars" He said it was amazing how many idiots asked to buy it |

I'm glad sombody else in here has seen the DVD's I'm talking about. They did a really amazing job of mixing all that stuff together didn't they?

Wow, that's a lot of pull. How the heck did you figure that out? I'm impressed. How much pull for extra lights (10's)? I'm guessing it is substantially less, which would explain why they're easier on the fingers & easier to stretch. Very interesting information.

That's almost exactly a 25% reduction in tension. That's even more than I would have guessed. They do take less effort to play, that's for sure. I guess "If ya wanna get the sounds, you gotta pull the pounds."
I think I'm going to try some 10's on my Elite 12. I really don't need more sound & I really like the *easier to play* part. Actually, a lot of the time the less sound the better for me. My wife goes to bed early & we don't have a very big house. She doesn't run the vacuum at 5:30 AM & I don't plug in my guitars after she goes to bed. Even the super shallow bowl is louder than I like to be when she's sleeping if I use a pick. My Epi 335 knockoff is perfect for me at night. It makes enough sound that I can hear what I'm doing, but not so much that my wife can. Otherwise I pay for it when it's my turn sleeping.
I know, I know, but it's worked for us for 25 years, she's a morning person & I'm a night person, what can I say? I go to bed about midnight & get up about 7:00, she goes to bed about 8:00 & I don't have any idea when she gets up, I'm sleeping :)
I wonder how much difference it would make (in pounds) to tune mediums a half note low? I should probably go to the D'Addario site & look.....
When I got my Elite it was tuned a half note low & when I tuned it up to pitch it made a LOT of difference in how it played. That's why it needed the truss rod adjusted. I have a feeling I'll probably have to loosen it back up to where it was when I put on the 10's. I guess if the Ovation people didn't want me diddling with it they wouldn't have given me a wrench. :p

Hands, I need more hands and you have proven it, not only would I play better, but I can't afford a calculator so I could count much higher on my fingers (would somebody please tell me how much higher, I ran out at 10 with what I have)? |
