Location: North Carolina | I need to talk to someone about a mid 60's Artist Classic Ovation guitar. Numbers inside include 1123-4 and M060. My wife bought it new when she saw Glenn Campell playing one. It is one of the first of this series. I have the orignal case. Condition is "pristine". Need to get it appraised. Blue Book of Acoustic Guitars doesn't seem to go back that far and I haven't found one on any auction site for six months. I found it on the Kaman Ovation site but no values. |

Location: Scotland | The Artist Classic came out in 68, though if M060 is the serial number, that appears to be '66 which dosn't make sense. It's very difficult to put a value on a guitar like this. A comparible new guitar now would be a couple of grand. Yours in terms of it's rareity, quality, age & condition should be worth upwards of a grand, but the reality is they struggle to fetch a few hundred dollars. If your're looking to sell it you're more likely to see a fair price if you can find an Ovation collector who wants one, and this is a good place to look. As far as the general used guitar market goes it's just an old Ovation, with it's appeal further limited because it's nylon strung & doesn't have a pickup. Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear, but that's how it is at this time. The situation may change in the future. For insurance purposes I'd say $1500-$2000. I think Al could provide you with an offical appraisal for a fee. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Ovation value is really an enigma. Most if not all (I can't think of any other) guitars either grow in value, or are hardly worth the effort of selling. Older Ovations seem to consistantly sell for the price they ORIGINALLY sold for with a few exceptions and flukes. From an investment standpoint, this is excellent performance by most standards.
I have mentioned this before, but what other item can you buy for $400, use it 25 years, make money with it even for 25 years, and then sell it for $400 again. There may be something, but I can't think of anything off the top of my head. I can't really think of any other guitar that you can do that with consistantly. (key word "consistantly") |
