Location: Yerington,NV | Doe's anyone have any ideas on getting the abaloney inlays back to the shiney luster, without having to replace them? I have 2 diamonds on my "o" that have lost their shine.

Location: Scotland | Abalone is very variable in both colour & "lustre" & doesn't go dull over time, unless it gets covered in the grime that can build up on the fingerboard, in which case it just needs cleaning. If the actuall shell is dull it's because it was like that in the first place and as far as I'm aware polishing wont change that. Only a few models, the Custom Legend, Custom Elite and 10th Aniversary are specified as having Abalone inlays. The rest of the range are specified as pearl (mother of pearl) though some early catalogs state snail shell inlays. Again as they are natural rather than synthetic there is varation in colour and "sparkle". |

Just a warning, Abalone is a soft material as it is a form of seashell, beware of any cleaner with abrasive that might scratch it and any cleaner that is acidic as it is a calcium mineral like marble. You might want to look it up somewhere to see if you can find reccommended cleaners. It is one of the prettiest inlays that exist IMHO. They used to make some great Abalone jewelry in the San Diego area where Abs were fished out of the bay by Ab divers in the 50's and 60's, it also was a great seafood when pounded and prepared properly.
