If you're looking for opinion, then I would replace with original pickups. I'm not sure what sound your going for, nor why one would want to change from a versatile instrument to a particular sound, but each his own. Although I like the Breadwinner pickups more than the Deacon humbuckers, both sound great in their own rights. I'm not really sure what you want more or less of that tweaking the pre-amp wouldn't accomplish.

I guess to answer your question... If you put mini-humbuckers in a Deacon... it will sound like a Deacon with mini-humbuckers.

<<-- ducking now.

I have owned a 72 gibson deluxe with mini humbuckers. it is one of the best sounding guitars i have owned. mini's have a lot more character than the full size IMHO.

Seymour Duncan SM-3 mini-hums. With regulars the pole pieces won't line up with the strings. The SM-3's are dual rail so you avoid that problem.

There's a few different types of mini-humbucker; The Gibson mini humbucker was introduced on the LP deluxe to get rid of inventory of Epiphone pickups after the take-over in the fifties. I aggree with Al that they're great sounding pickups. There's also the mini-humbuckers used on the Firebirds which have a unique sound. Another option is to have a pickup custom made to the spec you want. There's a guy in Wales who does custom made pickups which actually cost less than the name-brand stuff. He completely rebuilt a Breadwinner pickup for me a while ago. Turned it around in 48hours & charged me £40.

Bill Lawrance put out a blade mini humbucker replacement that was also really good. His first run of pickups in the seventies were some of the best replacement pickups out there IMHO

I agree with Al about the Lawrence pickup's. He's got a web site www.billlawrence.com
Another option is to install some T.V. Jones pickups. The pole pieces line up perfectly. I've got a Preacher that's set up that way and it has a very distinctive Gretsch sound to it.

Thanks guys for the response Samova I traded with you on the original pickups remember? I have a very rare set of EMG minihumbuckers I have been told they are 1 of two dozen sets they made. This way I do not have to worry about the poles lining up and grounding the bridge EMG's do not have to be grounded I got a chrome Shaller bridge from Samova and instead of wiring a ground wire to it I can just let that sucker sit there and do its thang!!!! Samova I am now having a pickguard made for these to fit and I hope to show it to you another guy had already made screw holes for that oversized guard you gave me or I would go back with the normal, smaller guard. Take care I really want this to be a rocker and I think now it will. Ill let Samova review it when I get it finished.

Just let us know what it sounds like, and, if you can, post a picture or two. I encourage innovation if nothing is destroyed in the process. I think it is wrong to predict the outcome of a combination of guitar and pickup until it has been done, each of us has an opinion of the way a solid body should sound, and we each will cheer or pan the ones we hear. Who is right, the one who says "I love this guitar, it has MY sound", who is wrong, the one who says "MY guitar is how ALL guitars should sound"? That person would have cursed us with single pickup Gibsons on 100 pound arch tops.
