Hello eveyone. What model guitar is on the cover of Walter Carter's The history of the Ovation guitar? What a beautiful guitar. It looks like a cutaway Elite, and it has an inlay at the 12th fret that says 1966-1996. Also it has abalone inlaid around the body, on the fretboard edges, and on the edges of the headstock. Is this a custom model? Thanks....Paul Hebert

That's the book guitar. We made about 50 of them, some mandolins a Viper and I'm not sure what else. There were model numbers but I never learned them.

Paul,

This is indeed a beautiful guitar and I'm lucky and proud to have one! Technically the model number is 1768-7LTD, but everyone just calls it the "Book Elite". It's a mid depth cutaway with Optima electronics. The abalone inlays are just beautiful and the spruce top has a honey tone color to it. List price was $3030. Mine is going back to the factory soon to have the neck glossed.

You can buy "almost" the same guitar today. It's the Custom Elite. But of course this does not have the 1966-1996 inlay and does not have the distinction of being such a limited run of 50 or so like the Book Elite.

I've seen 2 of the Books come up on eBay in the last few years and they fetched $900-$1200. I met someone on the OFC tour who actually had the Book Elite, Viper and Mando. Major drool factor.

Thanks Dave, your are so lucky to have such a beatiful guitar as this one. I think that is one guitar I would even consider trading my Adamas for. Now you know I must like it! There is just something about this guitar.

I just added a picture in the members gallery. You'll also notice that I added a truss rod cover - even though there is no truss rod! I just think the older style pegheads with the truss rod covers looked a lot better, so I've added covers to almost all of mine just for cosmetic purposes. Dave

Dave,

You and I think very much alike in that I think that the older style pegheads with the truss rod covers had PIZZAZZ - the new style pegheads look bland/naked. The truss rod cover gave the pegheads a "balanced" look and added some "decoration" to the top end, many a times I've thought of doing the same as you and put rod covers on my later models (Viper,Elite,Legend 12) Glad to know someone else thinks the truss rod covers are COOOOL

I like the truss rod covers also. I really like the carved truss rod cover on the older Custom Legends. The truss rod covers really help to make the Ovation headstock a classic.....Paul Hebert

Mike - Are you sure you and I are not related? We seem to have some of the same genes or something. Truss rod covers and Pearloid buttons? The Book guitar came with the Pearloids and I loved the look. I've since put pearloids on 5 other guitars. Check out the photos of my Folklore Deluxe. It came with ebony mini buttons and an aweful solid dark wood truss rod cover (the FD actually does have a truss rod). I put on full sized pearloid buttons and a traditional BWB truss rod cover and I think it looks way better. Dave

Dave,

We must be related 'cause I just read in another thread (Difference between 12 strings?) that you're a big fan of centerholes - ME TOO!!!
Ma always mentioned that I had a brother who got separated at birth (mix-up at the hospital)-She said that my long lost bro had a birthmark on his ass in the shape of an Ovation slotted headstock!(complete with a truss rod cover & pearloid buttons :D ) - IS THAT YOU BRO.????.....(maybe the birthmark was on his head in the shape of a slotted asshole....can't remember...
. . . . . .

I am also the proud and - wearing a big grin everytime I look at them - owner of the mid-depth bowl, viper and mandolin version of this series. I was told during the OFC visit that there were 7 of them in the series, some mandocello etc. I actually saw the 12-string version in HongKong. They just wanted waaaaay too much money. I would love to add that to my LTD family.

Just me & my Adamas!

P.S. StandingOvation - pearloid buttons all the way, should we start a SIG on pearloid button advocates? (We sat together after the factory visit, remember me?)

Bill:

Any idea how many book mandos were built? I've got one in my possession for about a month, until the owner comes to claim it (assuming that I can bring myself to give it up -- it is absolutely gorgeous!)

guessing 30 +/- mandos. Don't remember if there were and mandocellos. The plan was for mint sets, a 6, 12, long neck6, mandolin, mandocello, bass, and viper. and we were going to make 30 sets for the 30 years of Ovation. In the end this plam was scratched and they just took orders.

Ok, I just cleaned the sprite from my monitor that I spewed on it when I read "maybe it was a birthmark on his head in the shape of a slotted asshole"

If you think reading about it is funny, you should see the actual birthmark. I keep posting photos by Miles deletes them saying that it is in bad taste. Hell, the birthmark isn't half as ugly as some of the (non-ovation) guitars we talk about. Dave

Back to the subject

I think I saw one of the book mandolins on the Grand Ole Opry, I posted here and described it and someone said it was a collectible from the 80's but these descriptions fit what I saw quite well.
