Once I realized it was later in the evening on Thursday night, I turned on the tube and caught some of Soundstage on channel 13 KERA, PBS in north Texas, tonight featured Tom Petty.

I had long forgot about PBS' Soundstage program. I watched it every chance years ago. I'm not sure if this is a new incarnation or if KERA has just not picked it up here recently.

Tom Petty was excellent to watch - when I first turned it on one of the guys in the band was playing what looked to be a Rickenbacher electric mandolin...

Hope KERA and PBS continues with Soundstage, there was Studio 54 on here for awhile and it seemd to have an eclectic mix of artists, but it aired late on Wednesdays or something like that and didn't last for very long.

One thing I was thinking about while watching was that I see that day in the future of television where you can pick the camera that you want to watch - I always want to see the lead instrumentalist's fingers during the lead breaks, etc. I guess the directors want/need to get a feel for the whole experience, but the view cuts away from a great shot of some lead work and shows Tom Petty's boot tapping time on the Persian rug.

:)

That very same program aired in my home town last week, during our local PBS staion pledge drive... it was the first I've heard of 'Soundstage' and Tom Petty was very good. I believe that show aired in two segments?? I usually try to catch Austin City Limits, but now I'll have to keep an eye out for this program- if it's still in production... anyone know for sure?

Just finished watching that program, and it was pretty good. No Ovation moments though.

Paul, speaking of Austin City Limits, you had asked me earlier in the year to give you a heads up about Kaki's appearance at their September festival. She's scheduled to appear:

BMI Songwriter Stage
Sunday, Sept. 21
3 - 3:45

http://www.aclfestival.com/home.html

I'll be there with the whole family--my wife, Kaki's sister Karen and her fiance, my brother and sister-in-law (from Houston), and my parents (in their early 80's, live in Tyler, and still get around real well).

If you make it to the show, look for us up close to the stage. I'll be wearing my black Ovation T-shirt and logo baseball cap. I'd really like to meet you and introduce you to Kaki, and of course this goes for any OFC members at the show as well.

Yes, WTTW/Chicago (PBS) has started Soundstage again. It's done in the Channel 11 studios in Chicago. I was lucky enough to attend the taping of Chris Isaak and Raul Malo (whom I'd never heard, but enjoyed thoroughly). I know that've taped a whole season, I think in 5.1 Surround sound. So, keep an eye out.
