Location: Scotland | I just heard a news report driving back from San Diego to Moody's, coincidentally we'd just been listening to the new album. Warren was a true maverick with a unique musical vision. We'll not see his like again in a hurry. The new album is great, but it's hard work listening to it and knowing it's the last. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Ok, well this officially sucks. This is the first I heard the news. DC area is so caught up in whatever it is they are caught up in, that it has not been on the news.... so I read about it here first.
From October 2002:
Letterman: “Do you now know something I don’t know?”
Zevon: “I know how much you are supposed to enjoy every sandwich.”
Sandwiches are going to be hard to eat for awhile.

I originally thought Miles' "sandwich" comment was based on some obscure song lyric or album note. I'd missed the Letterman show as well (they should re-broadcast it). I'd also missed the VH-1 episode because of a gig, but Jeanette taped it for me. Hadn't worked up the courage to watch it. Figured there was no time better to watch it than last night (ironically, I was unknowingly eating a sandwich while watching it).
Listener-supported WFUV-FM here in NYC did a fitting day of tribute. Got the news during my early morning commute. Kinda like George (Harrison), you KNEW it was coming and expected it, but when it finally happens it louses up your whole "mindset" for the day. Along with the smatterings of Warren's tunes, FUV aired some old radio interviews with him. Pretty funny stuff.
My favorite:
(Unbeknownst to me), some of Warren's earliest work was in the early 70's with the Everly Brothers (actually he worked with PHIL Everly and with DON Everly - never both together) as a session pianist. The interviewer asked. "So, you started off as a SESSION musician?". Warren replied that he worked as a REALLY BAD session musician. He said that in the early 70's, he had the only OTHER Rickenbacker electric 12-string in L.A.(McGuinn had the first). So, . . he naturally made the rounds to EVERY arranger in the L.A. area . . . .
. . . but only once.
LOL!!!!
They also said on the radio that Warren hadn't been feeling well, laid down for his afternoon nap . . . and never woke up.

Location: Las Cruces, NM | They are up there waiting for us fans to show up, and jamming in the meantime. Warren, and the rest are waiting for us when our time comes. We can't be indifferent to their desires that we "enjoy the sandwich", that is a warning to enjoy the time you have, there is no politician that can give you more than you have earned. Each of us can do more to make life better for those around us, try to be better while you can, that day of retribution comes with no warning. Warren truly managed to beat an unfair prediction, and we all got more than was hoped for.
