Hi,

I have an opportunity to purchase a new, but non-current S771 Balladeer "natural" top. It has the "square" pre-amp, so I know its not the most current.

It has a couple small dings in the top, not noticable unless you really look for them.

Also has a small ridge on the fretboard where the fretboard attaches to the top on the non-cutout side. Fortunately the ridge does not affect the action. If I want any lower action I'd have to have a luthier or tech work on the ridge.

I negotiated a $449 cash price (down from $499), but without a case.

I would be exchanging a CS247 Celebrity Deluxe GQ and paying the difference.

I'm inclined to go ahead, do the exchange, and get the S771, but I wanted to pass it by the forum in case I'm making a mistake!

Opinions/advice appreciated!

Thanks very much,
-Gary K

Hello Gary K,

Just my humble opinion (or my two cents worth!!) - You can buy many nice "non-current" Ovations WITH Case off of ebay for $449 or less and still get to keep your CS247 GQ!!!!! What type of small ridge on the neck? Does it look like a "flaw" from the factory? Is the S771 stamped 2nd anywhere on the body? What are they offering for your CS247? How much are they wanting for the guitar "out right" without trade? Seems like an awlful steep price for a "used" guitar with a "flaw" and with no case unless you just have to have THAT model!! I would look else where! In fact if you like email me and I may have one you'll like!

Hi Mike,

They say its a new S771. I just bought the used CS247 Celeb from them, and want to exchange it for the S771 and pay the difference.

The S771 fretboard ridge flaw looks factory.

The back of the S771 neck just says "USA", I'll have to look the whole guitar over to see if it is marked "2nd" anywhere.

How and where would it be marked as "2nd"?

Thanks,
-Gary K

...sorry I was perusing ebay.........

.....Gary I belive the 2nd's have a #2 stamped on the back of the peghead but I would look inside the soundhole at the label (most FRG are stamped on the label) Also what kind of warranty? (lifetime,5yr,??) and is the $449 price the difference after you "trade back" the Celebrity?
. . . . .

The $449 is the price of the S771, less what I paid for the Celeb.

The warranty should be a new "Ovation USA" warranty, limited lifetime. I expect to get the Warranty Registration card with the guitar, as I don't see any other way to get it registered with Ovation.

So I would hope I can get the fretboard ridge fixed under warranty.

Gary,

You have to figure the cost of freight & insurance to & from the factory in your final cost!!
. . . .
Good Luck however you decide!!

Mike,

The O web site shows there are 2 Ovation Warranty Centers in my area.

Doesn't that mean they are authorized to perform warranty work?

I went ahead, and exchanged a used Celebrity Deluxe CS247 for a used Balladeer Special S771.

I found the S771 simply plays a lot easier for me. It is much less fatiguing for my left (chording) hand.

Put a new set of D'Addario EXP's on the S771, sounds great!

Thanks for all the help info in trying to help me make the CS247 play better, and on the S771!
