My choice: Cases. If you drop a cased guitar, you only wince half as hard.

Probably about the same with stands vs. hangers. Personally, I have one that was knocked off a stand and one that looks like a case lid fell on it. None with hanger dings. I can't imagine there are any statistics on this, so my guess is as good as any. But my reason for stands and hangers is simple. The humidifier works way better and with lots less hassle if all of them are hanging in the same room. The most common damage to any of my guitars is finish cracks. As far as I know, all those occurred while the guitars were stored in cases by the prior owners.

But there's also higher chance of getting played.

Been playing over 40 years and I've always put my guitars back in their cases when I'm done with them. I like looking at them and all that but I don't need to see them to get inspired about playing - usually I just get the idea that I want to play for a bit and that's it - never experienced any sort of correlation between looking at a guitar and deciding to play it.

When I pulled the other ones out one at a time, it was like Christmas seeing them all again. Now they all hang on the wall and look spectacular, if I do say so myself. Upside is, you can see the condition of them with no surprises as when they are pulled out of the case after a long storage, and unless you're stoned all the time, there is little chance of damage as long as you keep them in a controlled environment. The only downside is the fact that they take up twice the room being out of the case. A guitar seen is a guitar played.

I always thought that when they grew up I could have them out but, now with 4 grandchildren over all the time I think it will remain cases forever. It has done well by me though, my 1978 Guild D-25M is in amazing shape with only a couple of minor dings, no finish cracks whatsoever.

I'm not worried about natural disasters like flooding, but I've dealt with broken water pipes and a flaky water heater in the past. So I have six on hangers and one on a stand. | I've also found that I'm more inclined to play now that I have them out and accessible. |

I didn't use it any more than I had when it was in the case. When my youngest was probably 10, she was showing it to a friend and dropped it, breaking the rosette. That might not have happened if it was in a case. Of course, she broke the grandfather clock trying to see inside the back, so the guitar might not have been safe anywhere.

I try to play each of my guitars at least once a week to keep the mojo in the tops, and taking all of them out of their cases and back in would be a royal PITA. Besides, they're art I think people should be able to admire. Especially me. Of course, here in California I don't really have to worry so much about climate control and all the challenges that go along with that. I'm a player, not a collector so keeping guitars under the bed is not for me.

Otherwise, they stay in either their respective cases or gig bags when they're not in use. |

After my 1537 had the bridge pop off, I've kept all of my Ovations snug in their cases instead of on the wall. I then used the wall hangers for electrics only. This morning I go downstairs and find my Peavey T-60 on the floor. It's somewhat of a heavy guitar and the solid oak wood part of the hanger just split down the middle letting loose the support arm. At first all looked OK, these guitars are as tough as they come. Closer inspection revealed that the neck cracked. T-60's have two-piece necks and the crack is only through one half, but going up under the nut. I didn't have the time to examine it further, but it looks stable and fixable. I like having guitars out in the open where you can just grab and play, but this really has me re-evaluating things. So, a word to the wise. The best place to keep a guitar is in the case. Live and learn. I'm sure Moody will agree. The bridge on my 1537 is bolted down with two bolts...original factory.. Once my J -9 slimline Jazz -box tumbled down from it`s hanger , on top of my dreadnought..long scratch at the back of the J -9 , I re -did the hanger`s fastening , no probs. since then. Some guitars in cases , some on the wall , some on stands , one in my hands :) Mark made a point , once my ZEPEDA in it`s case , tripped over , and had severe fret -buzz , turned out that the big E had pushed into the bone -nut , a piece of Felt tucked in between nut / string solved the problem , I will replace the nut , " in the fullness of time " , but it shows , a git in the box is no guarantee for safety... Vic |

Mine sits on a stand in my study (ain't she purdy) and when the brain goes hazy from studying, I give the guitar a 10 minute fang and then it goes back on the stand. | No little kids around, one small dog who seems to understand how much his life is worth and I have insurance! |
