Location: Vernon CT | Ok, I'm sure we all have had them. Here is my latest. I found a 1758 string on C.L. for $500.00
and Long story short I made an offer as I would have had to drive up to 94 miles to get this guitar. The guy answered back with a comeback offer of $350.00! and he would meet me as he was comming down my way in a week or so. I E-mailed back and agreed to the deal and have never heard back. I sent him my Ph #, Nothing. Someone must have offered more. This was a beauty!!! See my one Pic. Share your disapointment??

I know you were quite excited. Sorry to hear 'bout the bust.
I had a similar thing happen once on a Pacemaker. Nice guitar with a good price. The seller agreed to the price with shipping. When I ask for his addy for the MO, he responded that a 'buddy' of his said it was worth almost twice as much.
I told him to check here and on eBay for price comparisons. No way would he budge. Major bummer...

I also purchased a big honkin' amp on Craigslist, but it was local and with literally no rules whatsoever governing the transaction, it was a matter of being the first to show up with sufficient cash in hand. |

During shipping, the abalone soundhole ring had come off and the abalone was splattered all across the case interior. :( It would have cost as much to fix as I had paid for the instrument. (I checked with Kim Keller.)
To his credit, the seller gave my money back. Kudos there, but I would have loved to keep that one! :rolleyes: SIGH!!!!! :cool: |

Whenever I've seen anything on craigs list I want, I immediately contact the person, and ask them when I can come over. I inspect the item. If it looks as described I don't dicker, I just pay. If there's an undisclosed problem, I point out the problem and counter offer.
I furnished my house that way. |

Location: South of most, North of few | The last one I bought off CL was the 1768. I emailed the guy, then got his number, called him and it turned out to be my insurance agent. Picked up the guitar at his office about 2 miles away from my house. :D |

It was worth it - I still haven't seen one in better shape. |

Location: Hopkinton, MA | I've used craigslist a ton for car parts (mostly selling) so I'm used to having 80% of the people who say they will "definately take it" and setup a time to flake. The worst was for a free little secretary. Everyone was ready to take it as soon as they arranged their truck. Well, after 2 weeks, I said "forget it" and put it on the curb. It was gone in an hour.
Guitars:
I bought a 1990 shallow bowl I think 1817 or something like that. Horribly high action. It had seen a rough life. I learned how to setup an Ovation on that guitar. I spent a good 10 hours messing with it. Had the neck removed maybe 8 times. Finally figured out how it all worked and how to adjust it. Also figured out that I only wanted one acoustic, so sold it on craigs for $25 more than I paid for it.
I've missed a number of guitars, but whatcha gonna do. Wish I had caught the solid colored Ernie Ball Musicman Axis for $700. By the time I figured out that I really wanted one, I found another through their forum for $900, which was still a bargain.
I've "graduated" to used instrument stores. I find that when I show up there.....they always have guitars. :D

Location: Singapore | I bought my Ovation '97 through craiglist. The guy lives in SF Bay area while I live in Singapore! My friend was there on a business trip, met him and paid for the item. I'm grateful the guitar was as described. Good condition and nice! It was a good experience for me.
Then I got my Concert Classic 1116 and Country Artist 1124 likewise through craiglist. I'm thankful there are honest sellers like these three folks from CA, CO and OH. May their tribes increase! |

It is their lower end but has amazing action, straight neck, clean fretwork and good "metal" sound. I have been pretty pleased with CL, now eBay is a completely different story... |

Location: CA | It wasn't Craigslist, but I used to go to car auctions in LA and they often had other stuff besides cars. Most of it was junk but one time I was there a few years ago, one of the items listed was '1968 guitar.' When the auction guys opened the case, there was a sunburst Jazz Bass that looked just like the one Jaco Pastorius played — except it looked like it had NEVER been played. It was freakin beautiful! It went for $300. I probably don't have to tell you that I had just spent the last of my $$ on a car. If I could have afforded a gun I probably would have bought it just to shoot myself. |
