Location: NJ | Last Saturday, whilst recovering from the previous day/night's festivities, Master Templeman and I were treated to a private "tasting" of Mr. Keller's Neighborhood.
While we were able to see/hold/play some absolutely STELLAR specimens, there was in fact one little diminutive gem that left me VERY surprised.
The Academy guitar was a very entry-level, student guitar designed to withstand the (ab)use of little musical monsters. it features a thin plastic top that has a raised edge around the rim.
Someone here (I believe it might have been w2) equated it to a plastic cafeteria tray - a very APT comparison!
What surprised me was the SOUND that this thing produced! Nothing even REMOTELY what someone would call "brilliant", but for what the guitar actually IS . . very impressive! Not much bass, not very bright, very "mid-dy". Very "Vanilla"(ahem...Taylor!:-) Temp kinda' likened it to some mid-range Gibson models, and said it would be a very suitable rhythm guitar for some recording purposes. Granted, this would be the ULTIMATE fodder for the "OvationBashers" out there and this would probably be one of the last guitars that I would bring to a jam/gig, but I think it would be VERY interesting to see how this little plasto would fare in a blindfold sound comparison against more "traditional" instruments which had/have a an exponentially larger price tag. |

Location: Scotland | Memory for sound is never reliable, but I had one of the plastic Macaferri's years ago, which are quite collectible & sought-after, and I think the Academy at Kim's sounded better. It reminded me of some horribly expensive vintage J45/50s I've played. Interesting that it was a 12-fret slothead. |
