Does anyone know why the fretboard on a classical guitar is flat? Is there some technical reason or is it just legacy. Dave

Classical guitars are played like a piano, the guitarists are taught to press the strings straight down with each finger, not in a death grip such as I use. Straight down means flat fret board.

Is there a hard, straight wooden ruler involved in learning this discipline?

It's mostly to with technique, and somewhat to do with tradition, but there are some custom builders who make non-classical nylon-string guitars with an option of a cambered 'board.
