Location: Central Oregon | I just saw a guy on "The Road Show" appraise a '38 C.F. Martin flattop guitar at twenty to twenty five grand. It was a pretty fancy guitar, but geez, are they really worth that much?

I didn't see that, but I will comment. NO they aren't worth that much, there are many guitars that are as good from every aspect of quality. because they are scarce does not mean they are musically important. Like a desk or chair, you can only sit or write in one way, a Louis XIV will be worth $100 grand, a Office Depot $40, each is useful, one is totally ovepriced by simpering, fawning, assholes that nobody who is in their right mind would listen to, other people just get good instruments (Ovations) and play on.

Location: Scotland | Depending on the model Pre-war Martins fetch top dollar. Style 45 guitars & Herringbone D28's from that era can go for a lot more than 25K. Whether they are actually worth that much is open to debate. If I was in the market for a pre-war dreadnought I'd buy a new Santa Cruz or Collings version, save myself a ton of cash & have a better instrument. |

I guess its worth whatever people are willing to pay for it (simplistic, but true).
Please allow a short rant - its like the local housing market here. My house in 10 years has quadrupled in value. Fact is, I cant even afford the TAXES, let alone the payment on a new house, the way the market has driven up values. Why so expensive... only for the fact that people are willing to pay the price. (Luckily my taxes are capped!) |

Location: Houston, TX | Just as information...it was a OOO-42 and it was very nice to look at. I stopped chewing my dinner and put my face really close to the TV set. It was a reflexive action, totally involuntary. Looked to be in excellent condition. Lots of abalone inlays including all around the purfling. Clapton is auctioning (2) 1939 OOO-42's this summer through Christie's. Estimated to fetch 60-80k for the one on the Unplugged recording.
