I've heard of Bass players boiling their strings to reuse them. My question is, can the same thing be done with my phosphorous bronze guitar strings? Anyone willing to admit they've tried it? If so, what happened? I must have ten sets of "dead" strings that I have kept as spares. Why not bring them back to life?!
If it is doable, is it as easy as just boiling water and soaking them a few minutes?
I'm guessing it doesn't work well,or everyone would be doing it.

Boiling water doesn't take much time, effort or money. So why don't you try it on those ten sets of strings and let us all know whether it works. |

Location: SoCal | When I was in college in the 70's, and even poorer than I am now, I'd take my strings off one at a time, coil them up and boil them (can't remember how long) then wipe them down with a rag. The green stuff that would come off them was incredible. The crispness would come back, but it would be harsh. Once I could afford strings on a regular basis, this was not something I continued. And with coated strings, there's no need at all. |

Location: Back in the Valley of the Sun Mesa Az. | Well, my wife was cooking some macaroni last night, so I slipped a set of Martin SP's into the water with the noodles. When I got back from walking the dog, both the noodle and the strings were gone, but my daughter was sitting with an empty plate singing "That's Amore'"
Norse(seriously though, I boiled them, but won't use them until I have to... I'll give a report at that time)man1 |
