I know this topic has come up before - what was your very first Ovation. But here is a piece of personal history you might be interested in (or not). While looking through some old stuff of mine, I came across the original receipt for my first Ovation. $159. for a Standard Balladeer in August 1971. The model number on the receipt says "628", but that was actually the serial number (really it was 10628). I also found one of the few surviving photos of this fine guitar. A nice winged bridge version, no less. Sadly that guitar, as well as Red Bank Music, are no longer with us. But I can relive that day I walked out of the store with my first Ovation just like it was yesterday.

Dave, cool story and picture. But I don't think your guitar was number 10,000 and something. I just bought a 1972 Balladeer on ebay and it's serial number is 6423. From the bridge, I know it's later than your first guitar. Also, I have the first receipt for this guitar and it listed for $285 and sold for $290. I don't know why.

My first Ovation was my Glen Campbell 12-string that I still own but sadly must sell soon.

I don't have the original receipt.

What I do have and didn't realize that I had is the original owners manual. That in itself doesn't mean much. But what I found on the owners manual is the phone number of a girl I met and almost married.

Very very very fond memories.

Paul, I thought guitars form 71-72 had 5 digit serial numbers starting at 10000. The only record I have of the s/n is the receipt (which says 628), so I assumed it was really 10628. I'm not sure what else it could be. Maybe 00628. Anyway, it was a fun guitar. It had the old style Kluson tuners. Really wish I still had it.

Just because none of US has changed at all in the past 25 years, we should not assume the girls we used to date have had the same good fortune.

Stone beat me to it... I had to actually deal with work!

It goes along with a Man's ability to wear the same size jeans for 40 years, regardless of spill over.

My first O was a 1974 1112 Sunburst. I would like to own one of the first year Balladeers before I give up.

Actually the things I find interesting from this photo are:
1. Sales tax was 4.7%
2. The guitar cost then just about the same as the case costs today
3. Used price today is about 2x what I paid new in 1971.

Good one...not many deals like that go down these days!
However, ofc member Bob Frith sent me a blond t-head before payment had even arrived to him and ofc's Goober sent me the 12-srting Bluebird to check out BEFORE I paid for it... "just in case I didn't like it". Great to still be able to do stuff like that on occasion.
Speaking of Goober, anyone know where he's been hiding?

Hee hee, I don't think my current wife would like that.

She was a very talented musician. She had been playing piano since she was 5, had a baby grand in her living room. For my birthday he memorized Gerswin's Rhapsody In Blue (32 pages of music) in 1 week. Was equally talented on violin.

That was around 1973-74. Funny thing is I tend to run into her from time to time. I ran into her a few weeks before meeting my current wife. She was already involved with someone, but who knows. Then again, I ran into her at the Jewel a couple blocks from my house. She was currently doing some modeling and gave my the web site so that I could look. Very nice (and NO, its wasn't porno! She's a nice girl).

I guess that's why I hate selling this guitar, I think of her whenever I play it. Maybe the Breedlove should go......

Second One

GAS in FULL EFFECT: I learned about the OFC and St. Al and traded my beloved Gibson Hummingbird for this awesome guitar: (cool hat, huh!)
Third One

GAS FULLY OUT OF CONTROL: I'm currently saving my lunch money (eating Ramen every day)and pinching every other dime I can to buy this beauty from AL (I just hope it's still available when I have the funds!):
Fourth One???????

Tim, re: Fourth One???

I e-mailed Al about that one a couple of weeks ago. Not to worry, though; figuring out the dollar exchange rate, shipping rate, requirement to pay duty, worry about damage through shipping, etc., changed my mind. Ordered an Adamas W597-BZ at a local store instead.

Maybe Al would accept a deposit from you to hold it until your pennies are saved?
