I'm not familiar with the song, but if this

http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/h/o/l/holycity.htm

is it.....it sounded to me like the key of D, and the D, G and A chords would get most of it. The music played with the web page seemed to be in the key of Db, though. The notes for Ab(6th string, 4th fret), Db(5th string, 4th fret) and Gb(4th string, 4th fret) seemed to match the harmony tones.

If anyone out there has a better suggestion, I'd like to hear it, I am a relative novice at figuring out songs.

Looks like LoJoe has got it. Good going! A little more complicated than 3 chords.....

LoJoe,

Thanks! That's Perfect! :D

It's a very powerful song when done with just one guitar (especially an Ovation) and single voice! I'm going to play it with my wife for Special Music at Church in the near future....

Thanks again!

What a GREAT group here!!!

Glad to be of help.

As the regular bass player and special music guitar player in our church, I have collected quite an assortment of praise/chord web sites over the years. The Website I found that song on is a pretty good resource. The chord transposer is pretty cool. Paste in the song with the lyrics and chords and select your new key. It spits out a new version for you. Good luck with the song!

Thanks again LoJoe,

I have that site already (missed it during my searches!).... maybe we could so some song sharing? whatchathink?

All of my playing nowadays is focused on Hymns/Scripture/Praise songs for the Elderly in Convalescent homes.... I play with another Guitarist and his Wife and Son... we do a Peter, Paul and Mary / Wegewood Trio type of treatment to most of our songs.. we are always on the lookout for more and interesting arrangements...

That's cool! I help out a local pastor from time to time that does a weekly service at a convalecent home. As a long time rock and roller myself, the music was an adjustment from the stuff I usually play in church(The one in my sig for example). I've never found a more appreciative audience though. The pastor let me close once with just me and my guitar while I sang "The Old Rugged Cross". They started to sing with me about half way through the second verse, first one, then another, then another until most of them had joined along. I am a tough old bird, but it was hard to keep the eyes dry. I look at these places as "God's waiting rooms". What a great gig.

LoJoe,

I couldn't agree more!

I had one experience: The Day Nurse asked us to sing in the room of a patient who was very deep in Alzheimer's. When we got to his room, he was in the corner unaware of our presence. We chose a very old/obscure song that had about 6 or 7 verses. By the end of the third verse, the Old Gent was standing next to us singing all the remaining verses by heart!!!

After the song was finished, he disappeared back into the Alzheimer's "place" and was un-responsive.

Somehow, the music reached him and placed him back in a pleasant place for a while.

We left walking 3-feet in the air! What a Blessing music can be! :D

p.s.(LoJoe, send me your email and I'll send some PDF's of some songs)

How do you guys deal with the copyright thing in church. We have a music director the insists we be "Copyright Compliant" so if we don't have the music and the rights to use it, we can't do the song.

Many of the songs/Hymns we use are Public Domain, and are for Worship Services only, but we usually don't have any issues unless there is a charge for admission. Then it becomes a money making concert and the songs would need to be handled differently.... at least that's my take on the issue.

How do you use songs from a Hymnal? Aren't the publishers of that particular Hymnal the ones who have permission?

What about those who "Gig" and do "Covers" of popular songs.... surely there would be a copyright issue there??

We have enough hymnals for everyone so we have purchased a copy of the music for all. I've been told that as far as gigs go, the club owners are resposible for the copyright fees. What I'm not sure about is if I learn a song by ear and write down the lyrics and the chords for the bass and keyboard player to use, does that violate the laws?

I can't honestly believe that there would be a problem unless you charge for admission and make money on someone else's song/work.... then there would be problems...

... do we have any "Legal Beagles" in the OFC who can comment?

Most bar/club owners pay annual fees to ASCAP/BMI that are SUPPOSED to redirect costs to the original artists/authors, but . . . . . .

For church services, our MOM (Minister Of Music) has something called a "CLLI license" which allows her to use copywritten material somehow. I think the non-profit thing ties into it somehow also. I'm not real sure of the specifics other than I definitely know she doesn't violate the law and privides us with tons of music to work with.

Speaking of that...

Tim, as far as sending me PDF's, I appreciate that offer very much, however I have a 2ft high stack of 3 inch thick binders of stuff I have yet to even go through. Adding more songs the list would just stress me out! Between guitar, bass, and the rare stint on violin, I am overloaded with sheet music and really need to get around to cataloging some of it one day. I probably even have that "The Holy City" song somewhere in hardcopy. Thanks so much for the offer though. This is a great place and it's nice to meet ya.

Cliff,

If that's the case, do the performers give a song list of their set so the owner can notify ASCAP/BMI?....what about Churches?

Ya' got ME swingin'! . . .
I'd imagine that the monies are just distributed to ASCAP members . . . . I don't really know. All I know is what I hear from bar owners pissing/moaning about the annual fees AND the added insurance fees (in NJ) needed if you provide entertainment - EVEN if said "entertainment" is two jagoffs w/acoustic guitars.

If you REALLY wanted to get nit-picky about it . . . LEGALLY you should be writing a check to someone when you sing "Happy Birthday" to Aunt Sophie when they bring the cake out in the restaurant . . . .

I don't know . . . .

. . . . as long as SOMEONE is handing me two monochromatic portraits of Ben Franklin at the end of the night while I'm packing up, I really don't care.

Cliff,

I agree... (I also found out that "Happy Birthday" is not Public Domain - notice it's never sung on TV!)...

I still will not copy a CD to give to someone who doesn't want to buy an Original and the same goes for copying pages from published songbooks... but the actual non-paying performance of the songs... to me it's not an issue...

p.s. LoJoe: uh... why don't you just box up that stack of music and send it to me? I'm sure it would take some of the stress off!!... yep, Great OFC.... glad you've joined!

We have the "CLLI" as well but it doesn't cover everything. I'm still wondering about the "hand written lyrics with the chords on top" kind of music. Does that count or only sheet music that's been copied.

Bill,

Isn't that rather like taping a song off the radio?

I still think that the real issue would be your making money off of someone else's work and not giving them their fair share... but in a pno-paying situation, it shouldn't be an issue....
