Location: puerto vallarta, mexico | i made a statement in one of my classes when we were talking about solid body guitars that is the reason for an interesting project. i said that solid body guitars had more to do with the pickups and effects and amp than the guitar body. i told them that if you had an old neck laying around you could build a decent sounding solid body out of the cardboard box that the guitar came in. that got a good laugh and the "pinche gringo cabron" look from too many of the kids not to back up what i said. i will laminate boat building polyester resin wetted box pieces to a hard rock maple neck block and use what ever pickups and pots i can scroung up.
the top is going to be a collage of guitar related box and wrapper labels etc. like "ovation, gibson, fender, digitech, line 6 etc etc. kind of like a pot luck where many musicians can contribute to the top. if you have anything that is a box
label or old vintage label of anykind, (smallish print) you would like contribute it
will be part of the project.
this will be a class participation project, so it might take awhile to finish. i could probably go to guitar center and get more than enough labels out of their dumpster, but contributions from many musicians will make the story that goes with the guitar much better
also if you have any reasonably priced small parts of any kind that you could sell me at a friendly price or donate, they won't go to waste here, if not on this or future projects, to fix up old guitars for the students to use and to repair theirs.
drop me an email and i'll send you an address.
well---it's off to the beach.
thanks |

Location: Florida | I have, in my small collection, a guitar made from a toilet seat.
Strat knockoff neck, oak toilet seat, one pickup, vol and tone. It plays pretty well... or it plays as well as the neck allows.
Your point is, and its true... is that it works, and aint half bad. Which also means it aint half good either, but it wasn't made to be anything more than it is. |

Location: puerto vallarta, mexico | interesting sounding guitar! my point with the class was that there is a vast difference between an acoustic guitar and the guitars made with progressively more sophisticated electronics and siginal processing. i remember the photos of the original les paul. the body was a 2x4 with a f hole that was sawn in half and applied as wings.
i saw gatemouth brown play what looked like a guitar neck once. no body. i don't expect anything earthshaking from this project. a few laughs and something the kids learn from. |
