Location: Ca | I had the opportunity to compare these two recently at my local GC. I am looking for a good, plugged in stage guitar. I had seen the Martin on stage the week before and thought I would consider it.
I was surprised that the CS257 blew it away! The Martin felt and sounded dull and "thuddy." The CS257 was bright and clear. The only thing I wasn't sure of was that the Ovation seemed like the string separation was a bit muddled. I couldn't tell if it was the amp or the guitar. It was a minor problem, though, in my mind.
I compared them through a Gibson Acoustasonic amp with all the tone settings in the middle, at least to start with.
I am pretty well set on the CS now. I just have to find a decent used one and I will be in business.
Anyone else compare these or ever play the Martin?

Location: Ca | Hi Woody,
Yes, I know there are higher end Ovations that probably beat the CS257. This one fits the bill for me, though. What I want is a good stage guitar that sounds good plugged in; the unplugged sound is not that important to me. I also want something that is comfortable to play standing up.
The only thing I am not crazy about is the neck. I would prefer a neck more like a good electric; a bit thinner and easier to play. The Taylors, IMHO, have really nice, comfortable necks. The CS's neck is a bit like a baseball bat. But, still I am planning to buy one.
I also thought about a Tanget T357, but have never seen one in a store.

Location: Upper Left USA | Try an Elite T if you can. It was a testing ground for the LX neck shape I believe.
The CS257 (leftie) belonging to one the Youths at church has been taking a beating for quite a while and still performs! |

Location: Ca | Yeah, the CS257 seems pretty sturdy. I like the OP-30 preamp too. I'll check out an Elite T, too.
